Firstly I am not looking to purchase this particular example. I just saw it on the web and would like to see everyone’s options. Im no expert but those bolt numbers look suspicious to me.

This gun is bad and is currently on the Rock Island web site. I know because I used to own it. When I bought it about 20 years ago it came with mm bolt. Of course some idiot had it "fixed"...thats after I sold it. Besides the bolt its a beautiful matched G date.

Bruce, just curious… did you sell it with the white paint in the markings/serials?

The rifle had no white paint when I had it.
The original bolt was a later 'e' block Mauser bolt (4089e).
The rifle was sold in 2014.

looks like an engraved #. these were done and the font shape and letter block can be duplicated better. The white paint hides the fact with not stamped. I fell to one that was an early JPS.

I'm at the point where I won't buy a gun with paint (or chalk, crayon, etc) filled numbers unless it's coming from a collector I trust. A lot of fakers are using it to hide the tells in their work.

It made (some) sense back in the days of taking pictures of these guns with cheap film cameras because it helped ensure you got a good shot of the markings, but with high quality digital cameras in everyone's pockets it's no longer needed.

Wow, a perfect clear cut case.

Great example, thanks for sharing, and thanks Bruce for showing photo's.

What a beautiful rifle. I am willing to bet a beer that it brings outrageous RIA all matching prices.

Is that cold blue on the bolt stop? What's with the discoloration.

It's "fire bluing" or "nitre bluing". It's not really bluing at all, it's the surface changing color (oxidizing I guess) with temperature as on the of the final heat treat steps, often enough done in molten salt to keep uniform temperature. It's the same thing as "straw" on Lugers, just taken to a higher temperature. Almost no corrosion protection but it does look nice.

Will someone bother to send the images to RIA and make them aware? Also, please post the link, now that it is outed as fake. I really wonder on the description.
