Real or Fake K98, Should I buy it?

Hello everyone, I have a question about this Kar98. Is it a real Kar98 from 1944? Considering it's from 1944, it's in a good condition. Also, is it normal for the serial number to be engraved like this on various parts? Should I buy it? Price is 1000$ I'd appreciate some advice.1080 (22).jpeg1080 (21).jpeg1080 (26).jpeg1080 (27).jpeg1080 (20).jpeg1080 (24).jpeg1080 (25).jpeg1080 (28).jpeg1080 (23).jpeg

For $1000, leave it where it sits. If it was sitting its force matched refurbed stock, then maybe $700-$800 depending on how great the bore and muzzle is. The yugo stock takes away a good amount of value IMO. Byf44 coded receivers are fairly common. Just not worth that money.

If the bore was excellent and muzzle perfect… I would offer $550-$600 max, but that’s just me.

Whether or not to buy it is going to be 100% dependent on price. RC's are perfectly fine entries into the hobby and make good shooters. I agree that the Yugo stock isn't' desirable. Frankly given the price of RC's these days it's realistically a $700 rifle, but you could also probably do better for a little bit more with some hunting.

Agreed, but bore for me should be considered in the price as well. Personally, I wouldn’t pay $500 a RC with a dark “fair” bore. Counterbore is where I draw the line. Again, that’s just me though. I understand that counterbored rifles can and do shoot very well and even sometimes even restore the accuracy to certain standards. I always feel and know from some of the top big names in the k98k collecting community that bore condition is ALWAYS a big factor and many times it has nothing do with shooting. It just inevitably factors into overall condition and value as a package.

OP also said asking price is $1000.

I suppose it could also depend on where you are located. If they're very scare, can't have them shipped to you, etc., then MAYBE. But for most in the US, I'd say no way at $1k. Kind of sounds like the seller is fishing. At the moment I'm kind of in the 5-600 range IF it has a really good bore. If the bore isn't good, I'd pass no matter the price.

Odd a Yugo capture stock and Russian RC action? Value is around $500 because it was messed with. Not really a true specimen of a Yugo capture nor a Russian capture-- a blend of both = a mutt.
However, it might have a great bore and be OK as a shooter , but no way $1000 unless you are a high roller and got cash to burn. I'd rather have an intact Yugo capture or RC true specimen. It appears to have no cleaning rod and a reproduction sling??? Check for a counterbore and gauge the barrel. Crisp rifling?

I bet this was one of the Russian Capture barreled actions that were being sold a few years back and someone dropped it into a Yugo stock.

Russian Capture. Here's my 2 cents. 1k for a RC is about the national average price in 2025. I love the comments of its only worth 300 or 500 or 600....those days are gone......long gone. Numbers matching K98K's can cost 3k, 4k even 5k dollars. The ones that say 500 or leave it are the same ones that would never sell a matching one for 1k. I wouldn't say impulse buy this one unless you have to have it but once your looking at 1k+ on ANY rifle, take your time while searching, look for a really nice RC or save a little more for a Bolt MM k98k.
