Question on P38 mag markings.

Someone on another forum has stated that the early Walther P38 mags with serial numbers, either on the floor plate toe or the side, had a "+' marking for the spare mag like the P08's. Is this accurate? I cannot find a single example of this anywhere.

Thanks, Mike

p38 mags

Yes that's correct. I owned mags serialed 9917 and 9917+ at one time. Sorry I didn't take a pic.

I have read that it was only there on some, and maybe a supplied new spare mag. I had a b block ac40 P38 with both matching mags, and there was no plus on either mag.

The very early Walthers, specifically the Zero series, had magazines that carried the + on the extra magazine. I do not recall when the process stopped, but I don't believe any that are serialized on the floorplate have the +. So definitely not ac42, probably not ac41 and may be some of the ac40? There are quite a few variations of magazines for the ac40s. I don't recall them all off the top of my head.

Hate to use this example, but here is one: https://pre98.com/shop/3rd-variatio...with-rare-ribbed-military-grips-matching-mag/ You will also notice that the last 3 digits of the serial number are inside the grips. This process stopped sometime early at Walther as well. I use early as a relative term to the P.38 production.

Mauser and Spreewerk did not serialize any grips or magazines.
