Currently offered out of estate where the deceased did have authentic sniper rifles. Hopefully this was not one of them, the mount looks like it was removed then put on after rifle was reblued, but even the base has been engraved. A shooter rifle with hopefully repro add on base! Put on your sunglasses eye damage may result if you stare directly at it.

Based on the amount of damage, I'm going to assume it's real. Bubba doesn't work that hard on making and screwing up repro guns. Only the best for him.

Hello,

serial font, placement of serial and shank marking and open faced base all say BYF41/42 it is a type 2 base by my guess.

So that then would be a proof that there were original BYF SSR snipers. Great, because that was the origin of my question!

Estate sale

So my friend goes to the estate sale where this rifle is offered, and buys it,,,as well as this nice Ajack that was in a Leupold scope box, these are the only shots so far but hes shipping me the scope to look at prior to us haggling. Hopefully good photos in sunlight will help but it looks reblued to me, the engravings are all covered. And only 53 numbers difference between rifle number on scope and on rifle!

If someone asked me on my opinion on the scope only based on the two pictures you posted, I would tend to say these are fake engravings, completely out of line and appear somewhat as if the engraver was drunk. But would need better pictures to make a final determination.

Here is the scope!

Arrived in mail today, nice plum colored finish with almost a gold tone objective end. Interesting color tone anyway, okay guys what do you think?

Scope is original sniper scope, but appears reblued. I would not say that engravings are being made new. As for reblued scopes, at my beginnings I also bought them. More advanced I now only go for untouched items, except item is extremely rare and I need it for reference.

Not Reblued

I do not think it looks reblued to me. Not sure how anyone can arrive at that conclusion from these photos? I would not consider making that statement unless I was 100% sure.

If this ajack scope is in the correct serial range of an SS d. and we think its re-engraved. Measure the thickness off a known orig. good specimen tower. That will tell you. Just like the last scope you had that was re-done.

The easiest way to tell if the scope tube has been re-blued is look in the engraving with a loop. The #'s were added after and should be in the white. If not then it's re-blued,,,, easy.

I am sure. It comes with experience, like everything else. At P1010587.JPG there can be seen the marks on the tube where rust had been before reblueing. I was asked by texasbadger by PM to give an opinion.

Definitely refinished engraving has bluing in it and you can see tiny pitted areas under the bluing

Comparing the letters it looks original to me. And would also agree on the reblueing. Also note the engravings on the adjustment are overblued (cold blueing on brass gives this awful colour), where there should be a cover of paint.

Well, at least an original scope!

Edit: noted one odd thing, but would need comparison with other scopes. All of my SSDG scopes had a sharp edge at the rear of the objective housing, while this scope has a round edge. Can anyone else confirm this for his/her scope?
