Odd ball byf44

I don't claim to be mauser smart and this one certainly doesn't conform to any of the norms. What I believe I have here is a byf 44 i block completed on a byf43 receiver. All of the features scream mid/late 44 (stamped parts, numbering conventions, etc), but what has me wondering is why this one is serial numbered on the receiver, rather than on the barrel like most 44 i blocks would be. Was it serial numbered in the i block of 43 and then integrated later? But why the letter suffix in line rather than below? Interested to hear more knowledgeable folks chime in. Good rifle overall that has it's original 1944sling.

great odd ball rifle.. Maybe Bruce can shed some light on this one ? I thought this one was right up his alley. These don't turn up very often.

If I had to guess, this is a byf43 L block rifle that failed final inspection and was scrapped, receiver was salvaged (the serial on the receiver was stamped in 1943). At a later time, inthe "i" block of 1944, the receiver reentered the production line and was finished. Neat gun - my feeling is there are probably a lot of rifles similar to this that don't get identified, as receivers were probably reused within the same blocks or a few blocks later. By the way, I have a byf44 L block with the same letter suffix on the receiver, and the bolt is lettered with an "i" as well - mine isn't a reclaimed receiver, but shows that the workers didn't read the receiver suffix as an L in late 44 either.

ok so its an L block not an I block Byf43 .. I knew the L's and the I's changed shape slightly between 43 and 44.

What's the rest of the barrel code? The 44 def shows later completion,
But I bet there are enough byf44 recorded to narrow it down with barrel blank maker and lot number.

Cool rifle.
