Oberndorf BCD43. Field mod PU?

As promised, here is my Oberndorf assembled K98 on a BCD 43 action. It’s a no letter block, BCD43, which is consistent with the discussion of these in the K98 books. Astrawerke is reported to have supplied such actions as well as bolt parts (the cocking piece/safety on this rifle match themselves but not the rest of the all matching parts) in late 43 and reportedly showed up on early 1944 Oberndorf rifles.

The pics speak for themselves but as far as the authenticity of it being a German field-modded sample, I’ll share my thoughts of the pros and cons, not necessarily in the order of importance.

Pros: The stock mount cuts share the exact patina as the rest of the stock. The mount is original Russian per my expert friends here. The scope is a plausible date, and is original, not refurbed. There are no signs of the scope having ever been in a different mount. The base screws are not modern screws, but more on that later. The rear base spacer is a pair of moderately patinaed washers. The previous owner, now deceased, was known to have cobbled K98s together from parts, though I never saw one advertised to be anything but what it was; a parts build. But he also had a very extensive collection including some very nice untouched originals. Surely he knew this particular rifle was rare enough that using it to fake a field mod sniper would have been blasphemous. And we know he had literally dozens of other K98s he could have used instead if he was intent on building a fake.

Cons: While the odd base screws appear period correct, they are a metric size and pitch. Not a deal breaker necessarily, but the pitch is one that a Russian member here says was not utilized until after the war. There are folks here who say Mauser action screws were a more likely candidate for a field mod, but I take issue with that due to the coarse threads of action screws and the minimal material thickness of the non-sniper action. If I were building this I would choose the finest pitch screw available, which is exactly what these are. I have tried to research what taps and dies a waffenmeister might have been equipped with and haven’t come up with anything definitive.

Hopefully the pics are sufficient to form your own opinions. I wince at the thought of getting flamed but please share, pro or con.

Some pics are too big so I will reduce those and attach to a follow up post. IMG_3657.jpegIMG_3667.jpegIMG_3669.jpegIMG_3674.jpegIMG_3676.jpegIMG_3679.jpegIMG_3680.jpegIMG_3681.jpegIMG_3682.jpegIMG_3683.jpegIMG_3692.jpeg

In regards to my PU K98 the holes and thread pitch was that of a K98 trigger guard screw and I believe it was the same with Seth`s PU K98 . I do have first hand knowledge that when the original hole plugs were removed there were that which matched that of the K98 trigger guard screws There is documentations that said the Russian had fit PU Mounts and Scopes to the K98 rifles . Its also known that the German did the same , which Imo would explain the different types of screws found on the known examples .

I recall seeing and inspecting this rifle in hand at the shop were Jeff purchased it . I knew the collector who Jeff is referring too and had been to his home a few times to visit with him and view his collection . As Jeff mentioned he did have a couple German Sniper Rifles , he did have 2 nice original Mauser HT`s . The Base cutout does look period imho on this PU K98 Stock .

The one thing that I found strange/troubling was the use of the washers and also the lack of locking screws for the main mounting Base Screws when I was thinking about buying said PU K98 and those were 2 reasons why I decided to pass on it and other reason, I was also aware that said collector was well known for fabricating representative Sniper rifles .

The other possibility is this rifle is an original PU K98 that was purchased without Base and Mount and said collector was able to figure out it originally had a Russian Mount & Scope of some type . We will never know for certain which is factually correct , but there is a few different possibilities and its impossible to say with 100% certainty which is true .

yea i was there also when the rifle was purchased. I woulda bought it if Jeff didnt knowing it would never be 100% accepted as original. The collection in question had a few nice rifles, and alot of wierd crap. I only saw 1 one the snipers and didnt look close as i could see a LSR recoil ringed scope on a turret rifle.

another oddity he had was a G33/40 in 8.15x46R. that one had me curious for a bit till i ran it buy some guys here. I did pull this excellent GEW 98 from the hoard..

apparently the deceased PO was at least well connected in the collecting world. who knows what passed thru his hands over the decades?

Oh yes , I recall looking at this Gew98 there was much interest around it from many different collectors the biggest problem was , it was such an oddity that had no idea what it really was or if it was original or not myself included . You certainly hit the ball out of the park with that purchase !!!

Even some of Frannie`s restoration were worth buying and some were worth the sum of the parts alone at the prices he had them listed for .
