Hi,

I am interested in a K98 from 1937 made by Mauser (code S/42). Is there any information on the markings which are supposed to be on the K98? It has a waffenambt marking (multiple) without a swastika. Is that ok for the period?

Hope to get some help. Haven't got any pictures.

Sure… scroll down in the link to find a comparable…

as Bob suggests, spend some time looking at similar rifles in the reference section, there 2 nice ‘37 S/42s to look at.
on the one you are looking at, what letter block is it? (the small cursive letter behind or below the serial number) on the walnut example above, an ‘m’ block rifle, the firing proofs are ‘Weimar’ eagles as are most other marks, but if there’s an ‘eagle H’ on the right butt side, THAT eagle may have a swaz if it can be seen. towards the end of ‘37 (y block etc) the firing proofs & some other acceptance stamps were changed to e/swaz. IIRC, a ‘37 will have almost all e/63 or WaA63 inspection marks as MO was making most parts in house.
I don’t have my books handy, but the letter block can lead to a date range, and it is documented when the proofs changed @ Mauser Oberndorf in that year.
‘37s are nicely made rifles, before the sxxt hit the fan.
