K98 Front Sight Adjustment Tool (2021)

Hi,

I'm just wondering what is available (preferably able to be shipped to Central Europe) as far as K98 Front Sight Adjustment tools?

A while back during a day at the range, my Mauser experienced a very noticeable POI shift during the session, such that at 200 Yards, the shots are landing about about 1 ft or so to the right! I've tried hitting the front sight with no success... time to find the right tool!

I usually use a brass or aluminum homemade punch and had great succes ! No steel It will dent !!! Sometimes there is rust underneath the post and may be hard

This begs the question, just why did the POI shift to the right? Apparently the front sight blade/base could not be to blame, as it seems frozen in place. I would take that rifle out of the stock and check it out thoroughly. I have heard of rear sight bases or the entire sleeve (which should be soldered onto the barrel) being found loose. Would also check those trigger guard screws before removing them to see if they might not be loose as well...

No idea why the POI shifted. I took it to a gunsmith both to figure out and to adjust the front sight, with no success. Hence why I'm looking for a tool.

As for the ebay link, it says it doesn't ship to Europe.

so try another. there’s several choices, I’m sure somebody ships to “Central Europe” whatever country that is…..

Spoke to a friend and he mentioned the problem you experienced can also be attributable to either a crack or "set-back" of the recoil lug in the stock. This is sometimes visible when you look at the recoil lug and there is a gap between the forward edge of the lug and stock. Rearward edge of the lug is also dug into the stock as well. If your 'smith did not take the rifle out of the stock to examine everything, then he did not do a thorough job...

I use the same sight adjustment tool as Muncher1953 which I bought off of ebay. Put a drop of Kroil on the sight and a few hours later it moves.

Interesting. And how such a problem typically remedied?
It depends on the amount of damage to the stock around the recoil lug. If the wood is kind of crushed rearwards, the lug would be removed first. Then a section might need to be machined or artfully chiseled out and a new donor piece of wood pinned and glued in place. If there are cracks running rearwards, those need to be glued and pinned as well to stabilize them. When I refer to "pinned", this would be a couple of holes drilled and a wooden dowel tapped into place. Any excess could be filed or ground down with a tool like a Dremel. If need be, PM me and I will provide my friend's email address. You could email him with detailed photos and he would probably be able to provide the best repair approach.

Thanks, next time I get the rifle in my hands I'll check it out. But that would certainly seem like a reasonable explanation of why the POI shifted in the middle of a shooting session.

It only took a couple years, but I was finally able to rescue my Mauser from a certain Despotic Dictatorship, and now I can finally take a look at the Recoil Lug!

Here's some photos. What do you guys think?

You can get these off flebay. They work great. No scratching of the sight. If it cannot be
Shipped to you any machinest worth his salt can make you one. You can see the seller in the first photo. I have no connection to him. Just trying to help you out and point you in the right direction. By the way they will not work to INSTALL a sight just to adjust one.

Looks fine from what I can see. Closeup photos from the left and right sides of the stock
where the lug goes through will help make a final determination.

Aha! I just noticed something. I was comparing some of my old photos to the rifle as it is now, and I noticed that the nut that holds the recoil lug, has rotated.

Perhaps that's the cause of the POI shift. Now the question is, should I tighten it, loosen it, take it out and clean it, etc. etc.

What gunsmithing Voodoo should I know about recoil lugs?

Here's old and new photos.
(Old: spanner holes at 12 and 6)
(New: Spanner holes at 3 and 9)

A loose lug can definitely affect POI. That and improperly fitting and improperly torqued action screws. These are the most common causes yet most easily fixed. There’s a torque value for that recoil lug spanner. On my shooters I’ll use blue loctite and I’ll two finger tighten a far as I can go and then another 1/4 turn. That’s pretty much forearm “universal” eyeball torque. On collectors I simply go as far as needed to keep it from coming loose so as to not split or compress the stock. Use proper torque values and a torque wrench. Necessary things for a K98k shooter IMHO: proper gun screwdriver bits; proper recoil lug spanner bit (cheap Wheeler bit works fine); firearm torque wrench (again Wheeler ain’t the best but works fine); blue Loctite.

There are threads here on tools and such. Good luck with this brother. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful guys here.
