New in my collection :

Please does anyone know more information about this bayonet modification?
Is this a post-war adjustment?

Does anyone have the same piece?

Post war modification. No German soldier would do that or was allowed to.
Probably done by a farmer and used to cut down crops like wheat, hay etc. Just my opinion.

Question for you. Was bayonet found in Europe?

Bought from Germany.
After the war, European farmers had to use what was available to work with. I have seen many bayonets used as tools for farming. They are always coming out of the "woodwork" so to speak. Mostly sharpened to heck and well used. Some modified to perform some task. This is the first one I have seen that was modified like yours. Not worth anything collector wise but, still a part of the S84/98 III history. Wipe it down with oil, put it up on a wall and let it be what it is now.

7955 L is unreal, most real its a written e letter on 44ffc, similar tool/bayonet rework are reported mainly on longer blade bayonets - S98/05, but i have already seen similar on S84/98, that was done bya local smith as the blade tip was heated and hammered to this shape of sickel tool. Mainly the bayonets were reused as butcher knifes here in area of middle Europe, also more time sharpened.

I met a guy in Germany years back who had one where the tip had been cliped and filed into a V-shaped prong. Basically turned into a large two pronged fork with a cutting edge. He used it for grilling.

You've got to remember that for years these things were junk at best. We value them now, but that's a relatively new development in these things lives.
