Hello,
Can you help me identify this marking on the barrel of my 98K S/42 in 1937?
It is the number 1819v.
CXM3540 and S
Ignore the "AN", is the neutralization French.
thank you
Fred

barrel code,

its part of the barrel code. Usually either the blank supplier of finisher or both.. This rifle was rebarreled at some point.. Not un-common for early rifles that saw alot of use..

Thank you for the answer, but I have trouble understanding, even Google translation helped.!:sorry:
Fred

Your rifle was re-barreled (reworked) by a depot, the barrel markings indicate the barrel was made by Geco (cxm = Gustav Genschow & Co. AG) and they supplied the ordnance depots with many spare barrels.

Bonjour Fred,

Traduction sans google :laugh::

Samuel

PS: For those who don't read French, I have made a summary/translation of the previous messages for Fred.

Thank you for this information.
Can we know the date of this amendment?
The barel could not be subcontracted in 1937?
Fred

Thanks for translating for us.

As for the Geco barrel, no it would be a replacement barrel. For two reasons, Geco only is known to have supplied one firm directly, Gustloff Werke Weimar in 1944, all others are depot barrels.

Secondly, and most importantly, is that Geco is not known to have made barrels before 1938, and when they were using the "cxm" code, these start in 1940, dropping their logo. Your barrel is probably 1940 or later, you would have to show the barrel code to know when it was made, the "40" in the code you typed might be the date the barrel was made or there might be more to the barrel code under the wood. I suspect the lot is "35" and the "40" is the date, primarily because I have never seen a 4 digit lot number from them (3540 would be an enormous lot number)

Image or type out the exact barrel code, cxm 3540 (what is after this? Should be a waffenamt e/26 and possibly a date), or is it cxm 35 40 (the 40 being separate from the "35"? If this is the case that is the barrel lot date)

Geco in 1940-1941 used "cxm" followed by a "lot number" then a date, then the waffenamt. You might look for an "0,2" on the barrel shoulder, as this is typical of depot re-barrels.

Thank you, the marking is 3540 and not 35 40.
I see nothing else ..
Fred

look at the barrel

look at the barrel and the receiver.. The 37 rec. has weimar period eagle. The barrel has the nazi eagle. the nazi eagle was adopted in 38 and didnt finish showing up 100% till 39 in some makers. So that is more clues for you..Mauser made all their own barrels during this period and I would almost have to say they did for the whole period.. Reworks are very cool in their own respects..Be glad you have it.. The 40 is the date of the barrel. It could of been rebarreled much later. I suspect 41/42 thats when alot of reworking was started.
