High Turret

Hello Sauer. Does your rifle’s front base have a RW marking on the other side facing the bolt? What marking does it have on the tang under the bolt handle? Does it have a RW proof on the sniper safety? I’m sure there are always going to be anomalies and overall impressions are important.

Lighting makes it hard to see everything, but looks like it is probably nice.

Looks like a nice rifle Sauer. I have seen another High Turret that did not have a proof mark on the front base nor one on the receiver tang. Certainly not the norm but it did happen.

Thanks for sharing.

High Turret

Hello again Sauer. I took my matching A Block 1944 High Turret out of storage and it does not have the RW proof on the front base either. Has RW on safety. Also, has RW on bottom of front scope ring. It also has the more traditionally stated bunny style proof on the receiver tang under bolt. I hope this helps and see photos. No checkered butt plate of course.

Nice looking and interesting early HT Rifle . If You take notice of the Front Base its has reminiscent style of the LT Bases very narrow cuts on the corners and on inside of Base You will notice there is a stop block were Base Retainer goes similar to LT with Stop Block thats held in place by a screw . Also there are no Proof marks of any type and no Tang Proof . This is typical of the early HT from what I have seen .

I am attaching a Link to another thread that shows an early Zeiss Zielvier blc scope and bases also on 2nd page is the original matching sporterized turret rifle which the scope & rings came from . The rifle is BYF43 K block .

Imho , from the info I have gathered the changes to the HT Front Base happened some where around 1944 in about the d or e suffix HT Rifles .

If in fact that is a bunny proof which I can not tell from your pic , Yours is the first one I have seen with early style unproofed front HT Base that has the Tang Proof .

Just to clarify , the HT rifles with early style bases that I have seen do not have any Proof marks . The proof marks appear to start after the changes occur to the Front Base

The Pics of just Bases show Early Type Front Base with LT Style rear Base and 3 pics of Bases on Rifle are Later Type . You can notice the differences between the 2 .

Here is another pic, but it looks like it was marked on purpose to me rather than a dent. It would be good to compare to others.

okay
thank you for your analyzes
it is true that the early bases in the high turret are different from the late bases
in these photos you will notice that there is no marking at the entrance of the receiver
something else the fixing screw of the base is squared

I agree its the R or otherwise called/known as Bunny Proof . I will put this one in my note book . This is the first of the early HT Rifles that I have seen with a Tang Proof . Just want to be clear I was not saying none of the early HT have a Tang Proof , I was only elaborating on the ones I have seen .

Here is another Early HT also c suffix and the Front Base is devoid of any proofs the Tang may have a Proof , I just can not say with any certainty one way or the other because I don't have any Tang Pics .

A bit late to the game, this one is a saved former hunting rifle. It came without bolt and with cut down stock and no scope. Basically original barrel, receiver, scope bases and interestingly original matching magazine guard that had survived. Took me some time to notice the front base is the very first type of HT where the "stopping plate" from the LT was basically also a part of the HT base, but simply by not milling all the way through.

I would assume my rifle dates 1943, at least the barrel does, and the letter block l (small L) would confirm this. The front base is extremely crude, I'd guess casted part that didn't got finished on the outside?

Edit: forgot to mention, seems it has a stamp on the tang as well - almost looks as the same as on Brians rifle.

thanks for sharing pictures
very nice variant of the front base, transition model!

Sorry to resurrect this thread again, but any more thoughts on the early HT rifles? I realized not too long ago also on this forum it was suggested there are no 1943 dating HT rifles, but seems there is now enough evidence to proof this wrong.

There are known examples of early HT`s build using BYF43 Rifle . Are You saying this proves HT production actually started in late 43 ??

No idea - this is what I had hoped to get answers for. What do you think? Do you think they'd start in 1944 and use 43 coded receivers, or would they already had started in 1943 with 43 dated actions?

I honestly do not think You could say definitively one or the other with any certainty , how many examples have surfaced to date 2 maybe 3 that I can recall .
