Help Identifying a K98 Sporter please

Hiy guys,

I own 2 K98k's a "BCD 1941", and a "tgf 1950", I didnt want to harm either of them taking them in to the bush to go hunting.............. So I picked up this wee-beauty to use in their place.

Im new to Mauser markings and would be really keen to know a little more of the history of about this rifle please. I was told its a factory made sporter and more than happy to listen to any comments or thoughts you guys may have. Sadly I cant get under the mounts for a code or date.

Would I be correct in thinking that this is a 1935-7 rifle from the 24G1 stamp, and an early b- block original serial number of 2585?

I Have tried looking up the 367 stamp and Google is coming up with this:

A K98k receiver factory stamp "367" likely indicates the factory code "bwc" (Bavaria Waffen Fabrik) and the year of manufacture 1937.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Factory Codes:
K98k receivers were stamped with factory codes to identify the manufacturer and location of production.
  • "367" as a Code:
The code "367" corresponds to the factory code "bwc" (Bavaria Waffen Fabrik).
  • Year of Manufacture:
The number "367" also indicates the year of manufacture, which is 1937.

Any help is most appreciated thank you.

Nik

hello Nik!
I concur with @GEM’s description.
“3 67” is the reproof date, I did not find WaA367 on code lists I checked. where do you see ‘bwc’? that was not a code assigned to a rifle maker, but there was a co B. Maier KG Brackwede in Westfalen associated with that maker code.(made some part?) you are correct about the original serial number. I don’t recognize it, but the font of the ‘b’ may be a clue as to maker. the font of the numbers matters as well, but harder to recognize due to being overstamped.

So - what IS it? your photo 3/12 shows the “24G1” mark, can you show the right side of the receiver just above the wood line? (just to the left of 24G1) if not removed, these may tell who made the receiver & finished it into a rifle. any waa marks on the receiver or barrel are likely to be original, & may tell history. are there any marks on the barrel below the wood line? a barrel code might have 2 digits for the year, & who made the blank, who finished the barrel.

another pic request- top view of rear bridge of the receiver, the part right behind the added sight base, the gate/ramp for the bolt handle.

These are all the markings I could find and a few pics of the bolt with drilled holes and guide rail.

try emailing the pix to yourself, that usually resizes them. or use imgur or flikr & post the link here. the size limit here is around 1mb per image.

interesting group of ‘lucky charms’ on the bottom of the receiver, suggestive of a Radom made receiver, but also Steyr made ones, but not definitive. the round gas escape holes on the bolt ID it as a ‘late war’ bolt body. too bad the right receiver was scrubbed. still not sure what the ‘24G1’ means.
