Gewehr 98 - Danzig 1916 - 100% Matching - Dust Cover - Trench Mag - & - Night sight

That's a real stunner with all the accessories on, just need a bayonet to complete the look! Congrats on tracking all these down, really nice examples of the dust cover and extended magazine.

Thanks man! I do have a bayonet. Just not photographed with it. Damn, that would’ve been a good idea.

That's really neat. Impressive.

How hard was it to find everything for it?

Wasn’t too bad. Though I had luck with one seller. Listing the dust cover set, trench mag, and rear sight. Though it was over the course of a month +.

My circumstances were definitely abnormal, imho.

The stuff is out there, you just have to be patient and also be able to tell repro from original; which not everyone can.

Your advice on the business card to get the dust cover on worked perfectly. I was surprised how easy it was.

My front cover is slightly out of wack, but either way, great tip.

Good, I'm glad it helped-- I've seen a lot of people scratch the heck out of the wood or, worse yet crack the spring steel on the covers. Didn't want that to happen!

No rush, but can you take more pics of the magazine? Different angles and all sides/top and bottom. I remember when that one was listed, the follower it came with was bad, but I couldn't tell from Larry's pictures on the body.

Any red flags? I took the thing apart, it all appeared correct to me. Not a lot of references though..

The thing is buried in the safe. I’ll see if I can dig it out on Sunday.

The only markings on the mag were:

“B over N” (spine).

Small imperial crown proof on right side:

I think the follower may be a spare. There may be a very faint “crown”. It’s just in my parts bin. I didn’t look too closely at it. Since I used my OG follower.

I don’t know about the spring. Only was marked with a “J”. Was weirdly cut to fit the follower. Imo probably not original.

I’ll clarify on my very first post too. I was able to stick the OG floor plate (matching) inside the magazine. Incase I am hit by truck. The rifle still retains all its matching parts.

I think the mag body is fine with looking at your much better pictures than the listing. I do think the spring and follower were bad though. The springs on these are nasty and strong (need to be for 20 rounds) The follower looked wrong compared to the originals I've had in hand. I think someone may have taken guts out of a repro and put them in a good, empty shell they found.

The originals would have had unnumbered followers, even when mated to a rifle; so it's not correct to have the rifle's follower in there, but since the mag's follower is probably bad, no harm in it. Good call putting the floorplate in the mag for safe keeping.

I've always put mine on rifles that had mismatch floor plate and follower, as they were likely originally fitted with them. (Sort of like how I put my action covers on rifles with stains on the stock)

Either way, it's a cool setup and glad you take good photos. Titanic deck photos are better than nothing, but it's always appreciated when people actually take time and do nice ones!

Thanks for the clarification. No doubt then about the follower spring. It’s a limp, sad little spring. Definitely not enough tension to correctly feed 20 rounds.

Yeah the originals are pretty strong and you take your life in your own hands if you try to remove from a rifle without putting the little tab in to keep the follower down. Lol.
