German WW1 captured SMLE picture

I tried my hardest to win this auction, but this picture went for big money. The other bidder came in at the last few seconds and won it. Still this is one of the nicest period pictures I have seen showing a German WW1 soldier with a captured SMLE. Love that this SMLE still has the volley sights on it as well. I did notice this soldier has a German bayonet on his belt. I wonder if this SMLE was adapted to accept a German bayonet.

I can’t see how the subject SMLE was adapted for a German bayo. That said great photo! I’ve never seen an Imperial soldier w/ an SMLE.

I've only ever seen two Marc and this one I tried hard to go after. Unfortunately someone came in at the last minute I thought I had it in the bag I guess not.

The perils of ebays system, sadly. I prefer it to GunBroker 15 minute thing though

Damn cool photo, Jordan; nice snag. Since the bayonet lug is not adapted it makes me wonder if it was maybe a prop for the photographer.

Similar studio photos are well known, more real is the rifle was a equipment from the studio as a typical weapon of this soldier, as mentioned the german bayonet could be not attached on that rifle.

Cool pic!

There are whole series of contemporary pics known, all made in the same studios with the same equipment. Sometimes you can even identify the studio by the equipment used. I guess this is the way the SMLE found its way on this pic.

The German Schutztruppe from the DOA captured 455 SMLE at the Battle of Tanga in November 1914 alone. Also the German troops part of the SVC or Shanghai Volunteer Corps where issued and carried British Lee Metford Mk II rifles with British 1903 bandolier pouches. There is one photo of a SVC soldier with a SMLE.
