Very interesting and the true history of the battlefields from which these items are picked. Hopefully the guys digging are recording important finds.

Much OK, thanks Arditi, interesting stuff. I always enjoy looking at battlefield dug stuff :happy0180:

I also find battlefield recovered items fascinating. I have a few odds and ends myself but nothing like your helmets. Hard to imagine what its been through. Thanks for the pictures

Thank you Gentlemen. I received this in the mail today. I'm excited to write about it and see if I can successfully arrest the rust/decline of the condition and stabilize it.

Great helmet Arditi! I only discovered oxalic acid about a month ago and tried it on a helmet,it's fantastic stuff.I want to treat all my dug ups in it eventually.

Hi Deadeye,
I'm trying my first oxalic bath as we are talking. The helmet is soaking now. On a bit of a macabre note, it appears I have found some of the warrior's hair where the shrapnel came in. I know the whole blood rusting issue is suspect, but I will let you Guys be the last word. I have put the man's hair in a small clear packet. The first dip of 20 minutes has brought the crown stamp out very clear! Also, I believe the helmet had a cloth cover which appears to have burned to the helmet. It was not clear initially when handling the helmet. Perhaps body burning at that time? Interesting I think. My wife was taking pictures while I had my gloves on, so hopefully they are clear enough. Back soon. Still roasting in the acid so to speak.

Quick write-up and I need to go back out there. I'm having psychosomatic feelings on my body of acid attacking me. I'm itching!

My thanks Deadeye and Timothy. Here is a page I finished late this evening. It's been fun trying to safely save history by gently cleaning this helmet. More of the finished product when I have time.
Regards, Russ
