A friend of mine bought a very nice 1938 Erma 98k with this Bakelite action cover. I’ve never seen one like this, no markings and it fits a 98k perfectly. Any ideas?

Just wanted to say this is a first for me. Only action covers I'm aware of is the leather/canvas ones.

Are you sure this is Bakelite? It looks more stamped metal sheet to me, especially for being this thin I cannot imagine it being Bakelite.

Can you ask your friend if this cover does not fall off the rifle if attached to bolt handle only? And would it work with turned down bolt handle, or with straight bolt handle, or both?

You hit the jackpot. That's not anything to do with a K98K. It's a very rare and very valuable Emil Klinger cover for the Gew98. It's metal, btw. There would originally be a leather strap to hold the front on, the rear stays on the action more or less by friction. Unlike the Weißenberger covers, these do not articulate with the bolt and had to be removed before use. As a result they were not very popular and quickly faded to obscurity. This is the second hardest Gew98 dust cover to find aside from the original cloth ones.

See the reference thread below. A lot of imperial guys would give their left nut for one.

@chrisftk for the win again lol makes me wonder if the previous owner or two had a Gewehr 98 that had it originally or if they found it a gun show or some similar circumstance and added it to that rifle.

When ya get a chance, please do a full picture thread on the 1938 K98K.

What did he get for it, and did the action cover go with it?
I tried to buy the cover, but the buyer knew what it was. The Erma was matching minus the bolt, the bolt matched itself. The rifle was pretty nice, he sold it for 2400.00, which I thought was pretty good for a bolt mismatch, but the cover grove the price up.

Really a good price, considering the rarity of the action cover and its value, which would be interesting to know!
Thanks for posting on this! It's always good to see obscure accessories from the Great War.
