I picked up this G33/40 yesterday from a local gentleman. The bolt is matching to the receiver and appears original to the gun. However, the stock is pretty beat up. It is what it is and I'm quite pleased to own this example. The rifle came to me quite dirty, but I was extremely happy to see beautiful bluing when I cleared out the minor surface rust.
The stock has two E/63 markings on the bottom heel, two on the bottom wrist, and two E/63 on the right stock. The original stock serial is 9753d and 6753d depending whether you trust the external or internal serial number. It was renumbered externally 5909d. I was not able to find a HZA marking to officiate my belief it was depot repaired (as on Hambone's pic stickied rifle). The right side of the stock is peppered with small holes and gashes and the front band took a pretty sizable hit, breaking the bayonet lug and a slug of wood off inside the barrel band. Thankfully, the band spring holds the front band and bayonet lug tightly. Buy the gun not the story, but I like to imagine shrapnel caused this damage and led to the loss of the cleaning rod.
I've always loved short, loud carbines and I think I have fallen in love with the 33/40. If given the opportunity, this will not be my last. I'm excited to hear the group's opinions on this unique example.
Thanks!
