COF 44 "Y" Block

Just picked this up at a flea market today. Only one WaA I can find is on the backside. They get pretty crude in this block. Love the grinding marks.

Y block is a the final block, I think it maxes outs at about SN 1900.

Possible it made it without one? I don’t know.

The bottom grip screw has had a screwdriver in it for sure, they were careful with the top one. It has probably been disassembled at some point. The spanner nuts have crud built up in them and around them so it has been awhile. You wouldn`t think it would pass final inspection without a flash guard, but who knows at this point in the war. Nice bayo, love the grind.

The piece is very late, i have the highest piece reported in 1763Y, but maybe some exist over this, the mashinery on pommel is crude, i am same opinion about the scabbard there was for some period a frog attached, question remains it was used in war or postwar added. The WaA519 is normal, i would tend to opinion someone removed the flashguard as normally all the reported pieces have one.

It does not have a final inspection.

I agree with Andrej that it would have originally been fitted with the flashguard. Note the length of protruding threading on the bolts as well as the recessed heads. In other words, standard scales, spanners and bolts; just missing the flashguard. Regardless a really nice late piece within the last 1000 produced in 1944. Thanks for sharing.

Personally I’d probably leave it, getting a nice late one to match would be tough. Unless you could find a badly sharpened u, v, w or x block to Rob for parts.

Man, great bayonet ! Too bad, I had a w block cof in rough condition but the flasguard was great, I sold it unfortunately.
