Cleaning rod?

Hello all,
I am looking for some insight on the K98 cleaning rod. If the standard cleaning kit (rg34) used a pull-through chain and brushes meant for use with said chain, what purpose did the cleaning rod serve? Any help is appreciated.

They certainly made stacking the rifles in the field possible. I've been told that the other reason they were kept in production was to allow, when needed, a rod to be assembled by joining together the rods of other rifles. I don't think I have ever seen a photo of this being done however. Others more knowledgable about this will correct any erroneous info in my reply.

A squad could use several together to group clean. The chain allowed for individual cleaning.
