I was curious if anyone could tell me more about this byf44 K98 I picked up? It appears as “all matching” but I need to be sure where to check to verify. I have a return grace period if it is indeed NOT all matching. Thanks everyone’

I am no expert but the bolt is missing the H suffix and stock is probably sanded since it doesn’t look like it has an eagle 135 proof

I see. I will go to pick it up on Wednesday and if it doesn’t have the matching marks, then I do not want it. Thanks for your input!

How could the serial number on the bolt be correct without the suffix? Strange to me.

Look at this one for reference

Ahhh. I see the h suffix on that thread. There is a mark on the one I’m looking at, but it doesn’t look like an h. It almost looks like “I” to me.

I dont like the bolt handle it looks cut down too much. Yes Safety and Front Band also look sus. I think floor plate should be stamped, not to mention machining marks look wrong (sanded look) on the one there. Feels like a hump job to me. Does this happen to come from that Buckeye guy in Ohio?

Rear band looks like it was scrubbed, re-numbered, and re-blued...
It should be milled in all likelihood, like mine in the pic sticky, which a higher s/n than this one.
However, the action is correct with a barrel code D597
OP: if you were looking for something all matching, it is not.

Front band is terrible IMHO. Total hatchet job. I don't like the FP either or the safety for that matter. Bolt face is actually better than the other 'work'. Stock has been sanded and something applied.

I am looking at it from a seller in San Antonio. But yeah I do agree. Weren’t early models milled with the locking screw? Why would this have that?

I think it is stamped with the 3B type.

In short this rifle is “humped”, not original. It has some of the better number fonts stamps and whoever did it knew to a certain extent on how to make it look pretty good, but it’s clearly been scrubbed and restamped. The bolt root is some of the better work I’ve seen with the added milling marks but nowadays can be done fairly easily with the right set up. Most likely the Mauser Oberndorf stamp sets from Robert S. from years ago or even the newer production sets out of Poland were used. Definitely not some harbor freight or China eBay stamping dies. Rifle would not have passed final inspection without the letter suffix on the bolt. As others have said, the bands are a total mess. It may be the lighting but I personally don’t like the bluing in certain areas.
