Bolt Identification

Hello all, this bolt came in a “project” G33/40 that I recently picked up and am currently finishing up. I am aware this is a K98 bolt and not a G33/40 bolt. I sourced a correct bolt and I am probably going to sale this one off. I don’t know a lot about K98s and would like to identify the variant this is for. I’m hoping you fine folks can help me out with that.

It has E/37 proofs on the bolt shroud, extractor claw, under the bolt handle. Bolt handle is not numbered but shroud is. I have not disassembled this bolt to check the firing pin. Looks to maybe be refinished as the extractor claw color looks wrong. I was thinking Russian capture but there’s no electro penciling. Seeing as how it came out of a G33/40 could it have been a Norwegian captured K98 bolt reworked in Norway and put in G33/40?

Like I said, I’m limited in my K98 knowledge so any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the bolt body isn't numbered to your rifle, I wouldn't worry too much about replacing it with a proper 33/40 bolt.

I already have the G33/40 bolt in the mail headed to me. This K98 bolt just looked goofy in it.

I’m new to k98s but not collecting. I have mainly focused on WW1 and WW2 era pistols. I understand that mismatched will always be mismatched. But there’s something to be said about being parts correct. And come on it’s a G33/40…lol. It’s been a fun project.

Anyway if someone could help me out with what make/year the pictured bolt is I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

The proofs are J.P. Sauer & Son Most likely 42-44.

I agree on it being a JP Sauer though I think it predates 1942 bolt given the root has 2 E/37 waffenamts vs the lack of waffenamt inspections found later in 1942-1944, the cocking piece is a subcontracted component by Kohler which is typically seen on Gustloff rifles. Bolt shroud looks like a E/26 to me which would indicate Mauser Borsigwalde instead of JP Sauer.

Russian capture maybe? Did they all have electric pencil numbers? Maybe it’s just a “thrown together after the war” bolt.

The two gas relief holes in the bolt body are not visible in your photos. Round would be late war; oval shaped would be early/mid war. The bolt does look refinished.

AN-94 wins the Scooby Snack, looking at the book now I can see that he's correct about all the visible parts. :) (y)

The Sauer parts would most likely be post S/147 as E/37 waffenamts are first seen on later 1938 Sauer rifles when they dropped the "S/", not saying there isn't a 1938 S/147 with a stray E/37 but most likely seen on a 147 or ce marked rifle.

Thanks but I had to check the book myself to make sure I wasn't spewing nonsense. Maybe the book will appreciate a good Scooby Snack...

You both reference “the book” and not “a book” lol. I’m guessing that means there’s an agreed upon source for Mauser rifles like the Stills books for pistols.

I guess my question is which book do I need to buy?
