Just wanted to post this for some comment. Nice GI bringback, walnut stock, looks pretty much unissued. Late war type with no stock, receiver or firing proof. Finish is nearly all phosphate. Sling is a dkk44 in beautiful condition, looks original to the rifle. Interesting placement of the lower band screw.

nice

yes, no final proofs at all.. I'm not sure where the hi point of the serial range is but this one must be up there. I've never seen the screw placed down there..Also the wood apears to be a very dark piece of walnut. Most late bnz's are a light color and the wood is sap wood.

Nice catch!

Love the stock, looks like a tiger stripe walnut at the butt area. Are there any markings on the stock? Love the sling cutout for the frog, looks like it was done with a chisel by hand and the area between the bands up front looks like someone just took a coarse rasp to the stock, fitted the bands to finish it up and get it out. Very nice indeed:thumbsup:

Yes, my kinda rifle. Nice one! Damn that rec'vr is rough.

Does the safety easily move from fire (left) to safe (top center)?

bnz45

I have your 98ks big brother serial number 1677t. It is just as rough as yours but with laminated stock. All major parts matching. Phosphate finish. Screw on the side of the band. Round holes in the bolt for gas escape. No bolt guide.

Your's is a nice 98k late, late war.

WOW, vulch, where are you finding these things all the way up there in austrailia? do they have some kind of underground market us americans dont know about??? one thing i never understood here in america is all the kriegsmodell's seem to be made into sporters, well not all of them but at least 75% of the time i see a sporter vet bring back rifle not too messed up, it is a 1945 rifle. and that really sucks seein how 1945 is the most popular year for collectors. why couldent they just leave em alone?

Erm, what did I find?

That's not my Steyr.... me thinks you got me confudulated with Gerard

Only Kreigsmodell I have is a byf45 HT sniper :)

Nice one Gerard.

Question;

When you remove the rear band, is there another hole in the stock for the standard placement of the screw? What I mean is are there two holes drilled in the stock for the rear band, or only one ?

Don. If Gerard doesn't mind I can field this question. The rifle was mine for years and just changed hands from me to Gerard. There is in fact a hole drilled in the "normal" position for the rear band but upon inspection there is a burr of wood over the hole, AND no evidence of a screw ever being put into the hole. No thread markings at all. It appears they drilled the hole, didn't trust the weak area of the wood and opted to use the bottom application. Only one I have ever seen like it.

Also to add, Dave Roberts showed me a photo a couple weeks ago of an swjXE rifle thats serial number was just a couple hundred above this rifle. So this one is within sniffing distance of the change to the swjXE version. A day or so in production time I would gather.
