AC41 P38 Opinions Please

Hi All - Came across this AC41 P38, asking $1k + shipping and tax. Gun matches, magazine does not, was told it’s the second variation. Curious what everyone’s opinions are, I’m still thinking a bit high in this condition, but I’ve been wrong before. Unfortunately these are the only two pictures the shop provided.

Yes it lacks the ac on the trigger guard so it’s a second variation.

Hard to completely judge based on two photos but it looks like significant finish loss. If you’re just looking a war time P38, I personally would pass, for $1,000 you can easily purchase one in much better condition, albeit it would be one the the later, more common war time variations.

That was my thought too. After tax and shipping you’re really talking more like $1100, I’d like a nice AC41 and AC42, but for $500 more I think you could find a nicer matched one. Just needed someone to talk me off the ledge.

you see those scratches on the slide those come from the old staples on range tables,

agreed on the finish is a shooter $ 500-$ 700 max its a shooter

Been said here by some smart folks already, condition Assessment from the pictures provided makes it really impossible to judge accurately the pistol. Sounds like you will have No “in-hand” evaluation available to you. Due to the fact that currently no quality photos have been provided to you, including pics of the other numbered parts / surface areas, including the internals for originality and condition assessment........
......you should consider this potential purchase very carefully

No doubt that an AC 41 is a desirable pistol, and if it’s what ya want and what ya need for your collection I understand the draw to it. 41 was the first finish change from high polish blue to a dull less reflective type blue among other changes in markings.
But even though this P38 was produced in 1941 my notes say there
...,,(please correct my numbers if I’m not right).,,,,,, were about 110k + or - produced by walther that year. Granted that the pistols produced in 41 had to survive the attrition rate and some how make if through the remainder of the war, but so did your mentioned second choice. (one produced in 42) specially if it’s early production run and there were fewer total produced in 42. approximately 100k + or -. So, for less common P38’s, that’s a good option you have put out there.
Of the official adopted P38, the zero-series / 480 and AC40 are usually the ones that command the most $.

Value is always in the eye of the seller and then the buyer decides if it’s right for them. Any early P38 that’s correct and nice is a desired item for collectors of that type for sure. I believe there have been some accurate opinions outlined here previous to this post and some good advice for you to think on.
. Hope all this helps in your decision.

Thanks for the help gentleman, was on the fence with this one, opinions and insight make it easier to act with less “impulse”.

why in the world would you be on fence on this, this is a EASY pass unless its a shooter then the price is too high

stay off the auction sites and do private deals, you have wasted considerable time for a item that is obviously not worth owning,

slow down on the buying and start researching the aspect of COLLECTING what you are currently doing is accumulating. not collecting

1) I wasn’t on an “auction site”, I don’t waste my time with buying anything off of gun broker. 2) I’m past the accumulating phase and have moved onto collecting. Picking up the AC range of P38s though if I find a decent deal on something as I move along I’ll pick it up to flip it at some point.

I have an AC43, 44 & 45, I’m looking for an AC41&42. An AC41 does not walk through the door every day so if one comes available at a price that MAY be reasonable I will give it some attention. Blue book is always high, but I use it as a resource for reasonable ranges, I ask questions as I’m hoping to garner some insight that I can learn from and hopefully be able to pass onto someone in my same shoes someday. The point of this post was an open discussion, if you know of some reasonably priced AC41/42s readily available please send me in that direction.

In addition I am also working on picking up an example of each German handgun used during WWII. Making some good “progress” picture is dated and includes two WWI Guns (bottom luger & Ruby) but there is a method to my madness.
