My 96 yr old Dad collected guns as a teen and this is one of the accessories he picked up. I have tried to look these up and the ones I found on the interwebs look so beat up and they were still asking $1,500. What are your thoughts on its condition and value? Are these really as rare as I have read?

Take more pics of all the markings, and post that. That will help determine value.

They are not particularly rare. They were often used pretty heavily by the storm troops after 1917. Yours looks to be in above average condition, and is a more common second model made by Bing Bros. It has a dust cover and the adapter for the MP18 subgun as well which helps.
It should have a small Imperial stamp up on the neck of the magazine that looks something like this...

Condition is good. $1500 for the magazine itself is probably on the high end since it is the more common variation. If you sold it with the adapter and dust cover, probably $1800-2000 on a real good day to the right seller.
The adapter is of interest to some (not a lot of MP18's floating around), the dust cover moreso.
