I finally got around to taking pics of one of the few K98s in my collection for my files and thought I'd post here as well. This particular rifle was a "walkin" at the Portland, OR antique gun show a number of years ago. I'm not a k98 collector per-se (G/K 43), but when this one showed up, I didn't let it go any further. After a quick glance I told the guy it had been reblued. He dropped his price and we made a deal. I asked him if he knew any history on it. His reply was that he did not know anything about it other than it had been in the family awhile. I did not take it any further than that. Once I got it home and had a real good look, I changed my mind on the rebluing. I even took it to a well known longtime gunsmith locally to get his opinion. His comment was: "This is very nice, and it has NOT been reblued."

Sorry for some of the pics. I still have not got a handle on full length rifle pictures. Enjoy!

More Pic's. At what point did BLM change their code from 237 to duv? I'm under the understanding that it was 3 or 4 months into the year.

Please add pictures of the markings in the grip area and the markings on the keel (bottom edge between grip and buttplate).

I don't want to do "death by Pictures", so just the highlights from here.

I agree that the bluing is original. There is some damage to the lower band from improper disassembly, steel wool damage to the take-down discs and the stock was lightly cleaned. These are minor issues. They switched from 237 to DUV between the "H" and "K" block.

Please add pictures of the markings in the grip area and the markings on the keel (bottom edge between grip and buttplate).

I went through all my photos to get the best ones for you. On your later comment about the disassembly marring, I can tell you that everything on this rifle is extremely tight. I don't think it has been taken apart much.

Hard to believe of all the photos you took you didn't get the bottom flat of the bolt, I am sure it is e/214 x2, as it should be though, - the actual switch from 237 to duv was in the early "i" block, before the 2000 i block, though it is possible some overlap occurs, just so far it hasn't been noted. Making a lot of assumptions, your rifle is 1/3 through the production run for 1940, of course we do not know how many were made each month, but dividing the known ranges by months puts you at this range (130k total)

I also think the finish is probably original, I agree with D-K remarks in general.

Hello,

just to let you know if any one is intrested from my database which isn't the end all be all , so far the cut off is this close

237 1940 I1647 RC
DUV 1940 I1850 RC

so far also i have yet to get a reported 237 1940 marked receiver in the DUV serial range. never say never : )

later
