Hey Guys

I inherited a Mod. 98 Mauser from my grandfather in the 80s. There a a TON of Mausers and variations 98, k98, military, commercial, sportster, etc. I need help specifically identifying what I have and then the current value of it.

It's stamped 1944 on the bottom of the barrel. It has serial numbers in a few places and all showing "265". There are other codes and insignias, like an nazi eagle in a couple places, also some kind of code above "1944" which looks like "OO?" and something in between them, soo, please your support in identifying.

I'm including pictures for reference. The gun is in excellent shape and I've used it for target practice and hunting and only a couple small blemishes of surface rust where it flooded at my dads house at one time and rifle was not under water, but humidity in the air was soo high cause the spots.

Let me know if anything else is needed and thanks in advance for your support as the experts.

Robb

Was a dot 1944 all matching 98k. The inspection between the code and year is Eagle 63 but is nearly buffed out.

'dou' and 'e/63 on the receiver top. Maker code and final acceptance.

Finger/mind f'd that one. farb is of course correct

So, it was supposed to read:

dou
e/63
1944

that dou, really looks like OO-something! lol
Why soo poorly stamped (not Germany Quality), or just used??
It's in really good shape to be worn away like that, so just surprised if that is the case.

So, it's a 1944 98k made in Germany?? Is this a military gun, or commercial or sportser model??
What kind of value and grading would something like this be??
Anything else you can tell me about this?? This is all original matching numbers including the peep sight?

Thanks soo much for yout help in identifying this.

It’s dot - it’s not worn away, it was heavily polished and reblued by the person who turned it into a deer rifle. Was a military gun. In this shape about $300-350 in my opinion.
huh? not following you on the dot thing!
so between the year and eagle is "dot" and not "dou"??
Soo, this is a Model 98k and not Mod 98?
I see on Page 1346 of Blue Book of Gun Value 43rd Edition under RIFLE : MILITARY PRODUCTION, K98k (KARBINE) there is the following:
1944 - Code DOU 44 (WAFFEN WERKE BRUNN AG, BYSTRICA) - 98%, 95%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% - $2,500, $2,000, $1,600, $1,150, $850, $500
1944 - Code DOT 44 (WAFFEN WERKE BRUNN AG, BRUNN) - 98%, 95%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% - $4,000, $3,200, $2,650, $2,100, $1,700, $1,300

So, if this is all correct, if you could just confirm which one above (if applicable), I'd appreciate it. Likewise, appreciate you pointing out it was probably blued. They did a great job and it looks beautiful!

Once I know more specific what it is as you can see quite a difference in price with just, looks like manufacturing location! I'd like to know the approximate value in the condition it is in.

I have another one that needed valuation, but I found it. It's a 1918 Springfield (not Mauser) 1903 Mark I with Petersen cut out! These are pretty pricy, even without the Petersen device!!

I was about to say the exact same thing.

Also dot code for the Brunn manufacturing facility in Czechoslovakia. Each factory had its own code designation. The E/63’s are inspection stamps (Waffenamts), meaning the various parts/rifle were accepted by the German military.

And no, the peep sight is not original to the rifle.

Understood, thank you!
And thanks to all for the knowledge and confirmations!
I plan on keeping it and using it.
The 1903 Mark I is untouched, in excellent condition, and unmodified!! That one should be worth $3500-4500....but I plan on keeping it also, just looking for some detailed information and value!
Thanks again!

Also, it's not "all matching numbers" anymore. There are parts missing that would have had the serial number on it. It will never be matching again. It is indeed 100% reblued, which is one reason the markings are hard to see. Rebluing tends to look like blue that was "globbed" on. Unfortunately, there's no collector value left in that one.

I remember reading in "American Rifleman" and also in "Sports Afield" and other magazines when I was a kid (1950's) on how to sportize your wartime trophy Mauser. Guess it made sense at the time and many had top quality workmanship. I'm sure your grandfather enjoyed it, you should as well.

Yep, I have and will continue to do so, thank you! :)

I guess "collectors" enjoy something more like this Dec 1918 Mark w/ Petersen cutout I!! 😁

The Mark 1 springfield rifle with the peterson cut out has been selling around 1,200/1500 ....now if you had the peterson device add 20,000 , they say the sidewalk in front off the arsenal in San Antonio Texas has many devices that were incorporated into the walkway , who knows ...another fairy tale ?
