Got a call yesterday from a Customer /Friend who has an FFl, and he was bidding against another dealer for 21 gun lot from a widow who was wanting to liquidate her hubands gun collection. The only milsurp in the lot was a 1938 S/42 Luger and he had arranged to bring it home for 72 hrs to get an appraisal as he is is not versed in any German WW2 weaponry values and his intent was to sell it immediately.
Went by today to put hands on it . Serial 777 , 2 mags but none matching and one was was burnished free of all blue and the other had the plastic bottom. Grips ARE NOT serialed and the port side grip has a small chip out of it up near the safety. Looks like it might have been an 85 /90 % gun @ one time but the original owner (or someone ) felt it necessary to shine it up a notch or two . Its not real bad but is noticeable as soon as you pick it up which seals it fate as to the degree of its collectability
Tim thought it would bring good money but my opinion to was that it should be considered a beginner collector piece for someone not wanting to pay big dollars or perhaps a nice shooter. Tim was thinking he could get 1500 but I felt differently and was thinking closer to sub 1K. Its been several years since I have paid any attention to Luger values ..anybody got an opinion of reasonable value given its issues..? Any input appreciated
