This was another one of my recent acquisitions. Once I get better pics I will add them. It is all matching and a low 3 digit serial number.

Beautiful rifle - I love mine, at any rate.
Were you able to identify the SA2G marking on the back of the rear sight leaf ? Could it be some kind of pre-Waffenamt marking ? (yes, I know that commercial Mausers are not supposed to bear Waffenamt markings ! )

Thank you.

Actually it was determined just recently that some of the commercial Mausers including the 1935 Brazilian do have waffenampt marks on the rear sights. It is believed this happened because parts for military Mausers were used on the commerical ones when supplies ran low and contracts needed to be filled.

I have to get back to you on the answer to the SA2G marking. I know I just saw the explanation for it somewhere.

That marking on the rear sight is "S/42G".

That marking on the rear sight is "S/42G".

Are you sure it is S/42G? It certainly looks like SA2G. My understanding is this marking is only found on the lower serial numbered 1935 Brazilians and not the majority of them. I read there were GEW98 rear sights marked S/42G, S/42K, and S/42 and it was for year. Is there any comparison pics of a rear sights on GEW98s and other 1935 Brazilians?

On closer inspection of your photo, the stamping does look like a S/42G (= Oberndorf 1935) to me, but the / and the 4 somehow merged into one another to give the illusion of an A. That would be a satisfactory explanation for an otherwise unknown code.

That makes sense.
