Finally after having this carbine for a few weeks today seem like the perfect day to do a full photo spread and data sheet. Went down to visit a good collector friend of mine a few weeks ago and after doing a couple hours of shooting our stuff. We ended up doing a trade deal afterwards. When he held my chassepot German captured Calvary carbine he produced this fine beauty and said would you be interested in trading. He's getting more into the Franco Prussian war era then I am. So it was like the match was made to be. This 98a had everything I wanted. I needed a Danzig, wanted it early, wanted it unit marked, needed to be original, wanted it to be almost all matching. The action cover was just another piece added to it. I never was on the hunt for that due to how rare and expensive they can be. But it made the deal so much better, in the end I couldn't be happier.
I will say this if it wasn't for me I don't think he would have traded it all or even sold it off he wanted it to go to a good home and to a friend. I tell new collectors all the time the best pieces are sold or traded off between collector friends not on GunBroker.
Anyway now for the carbine from what I can tell that dust cover is completely original and has been on the carbine since it came home. The stock show wear patterns that the dust cover has been with this 98a probably since the war. It is matching and has only a few mismatched parts but the buttplate being depot marked explains that. Still finding a nice 1913 Danzig is pretty scarce, from my records only around 23,000 were produced for that year. But I'm not complaining one bit about that either just adds to the cool factor. It is unit marked R.H.R.7 which I believe is for Reserve Hussar Regiment?
Oh and the muzzle cover and sling that was from buddy Mike he sold those pieces to me over the years! Again thanks Mike.
I'll be honest it has been awhile since I have posted a nice Kar98a here I believe almost five years now. Now the dry spell is over and enjoy the pictures!
