1890 Amberg Gew 88

Found this Gew 88 from my favorite national sporting goods store; Cabelas. As we all know G88s close to matching are a pain to find. Left of receiver has the early “G. Mod 88” marking. Bolt head is of the undercut variety and unnumbered. Trigger is numbered “71” possible factory error? Everything else matches and the buttplate has a Koln marking. Barrel appears to be Simson made and is also “GF” marked. The rear band is marked to the 12th Bavarian infantry regiment too.

Looks good! Thanks for taking the extra time to take it apart. Looks like 88 barrels came from a variety of places. Of my 3 Amberg Gew 88s, a Simson, a VCS and a Böhler.

I like the dark Bavarian stock stain on these.

Thanks for posting such nice pics of this one! It's definitely helpful in showing what an original should look like compared to all the sanded toothpicks I see out in the wild. Congrats on picking up a nice one!

In regards too what I hope in getting a Gewehr 1888 rifle one day you pretty much nailed it! That's just perfect even if some small parts are mismatched.

Looking at trends 4519/g has a barrel marked S&S (JPS is S&S and S&Co almost certainly represents Simson) and Suhl makers were engaged in such work regularly it seems. (though Bohler made no barrels, they supplied blanks only, "numerous" Suhl markings indicate subcontractors made barrels for Amberg, though the GF indicates Amberg proofing so is original to mfg)

***Look to the trends post for more patterns, Amberg was flexible it seems in barrel resourcing though trends are too scanty to have many certainties here, - it is a start we are dealing with, developing reliable trends will take more time (I have yet to add half of what data-reports I have in the database) but is populated enough for a guide - really BC research is only in its infancy but holds great promise over time "if" adequate trends work is possible, - fortunately others are working on their own projects and I hope this forums efforts lend some help to other less public efforts (I encourage those with a passion to develop this further to use this forums effort as a basis or even a start to take this further - naturally you are free to apply your own variations and acronyms to "trend").

Thank you as always Paul. I see you noted this one has a Krupp blank in your survey, is the “K” marking the Krupp stamp in this instance or something else?

I can't think of an alterative other than K=Krupp; it seems some firms had contracts or preferences like DWM for Bohler and and WMO for "BS" might be Bohler though several alternate possibilities exist.... Simson too seems to group in patterns -especially late to Krupp; so too Danzig to Bismarkhutte which makes good sense due to proximity.

Really trends seem to group and suggest contractual agreements for certain time frames, but we need someone like Stephan to delve into his magic crystal ball (German sourced research) to come up with something better (or wait 20 year of trending...); I have never seen a better researcher, his work is mindboggling!
