I noted the V.C. Shilling one because it has the same “step” in barrel that others initially pointed out as an anomaly. Otherwise yes I agree.

I believe it's a "cap" as another forum member put it. It's a Gew.98 sight base attachment afaik. Would this be the method? Just saw this:

This isn't your typical k98k sight base so I'm not sure this would work. As it is a Gew.98 front sight base, it is more of cap than a sleeve.

So the screw is still present. However, this front sight assembly is very unusual. Please see pictures below—basically the front sight assembly was grafted onto a depot cut down Karab. 98b.

I’m a bit stumped. I took my k98k to the range for the first time yesterday. She shot tight group…but not where I wanted them. To add to this theory, it wouldn’t make sense for the Russians to even go about shortening the long rifles into k98k spec, considering how many intact k98k’s they captured along with spare/salvageparts, tooling, etc. It would be way too labor intensive for no benefit. It seems more likely that...

It’s a RC for sure, at least the barreled receiver. I suppose the parts could’ve been cobbled together though, but that tale is lost to time . It has the unmistakeable X above the serial number, although fairly lightly stamped on this example. I don’t see anywhere with a different finish so...

What would be the remedy? Shims?

I I did a full tear down last night and looked for every marking possible. There were no import marks anywhere. I’m leaning towards an importer forgetting to mark this one, since I’ve seen reports of that on RCs.

Here’s what I have to compare. We have the exact same front sight assembly it appears, with the line beginning at the front sight post. Your “step” is a tad further back it appears, though. We do have the same milling marks, although yours appears rougher.

Do you have more pictures of the barrel, specifically towards the muzzle? Thank you

What makes this an oddball RC to me is the total lack of import marking. From my understanding, that’s fairly uncommon?

Thank you for the reply. The rear sight is indeed mismatched. Also, unrelated, but the bolt sear gets hung up a bit on the rear action screw. I can’t find others having this issue though—is it the wrong action screw?
