    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I’ve I’ve found another example here: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/interesting-polish-rework-gewehr-98-to-k98k.50465/ Exact same set-up, and the second example of possible polish work.

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I noted the V.C. Shilling one because it has the same “step” in barrel that others initially pointed out as an anomaly. Otherwise yes I agree.

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I have found several other rifles in either the same or very similar configurations. All of the below examples I have found online share the weird "step" in the barrel in front of the front barrel band and/or has the old Gew.98 style front sight. I considered making a brand new thread, but...

What is a "Early" Receiver tang?

Saw this mentioned in this thread here: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/v-chr-schilling-suhl-1917-gew-98-to-k98k-conversion.21438/ Wasn't sure what "stock was not relieved for the early type receiver tang" meant. Thank you for your help in advance as I am currently trying to figure my anomaly...

I wonder if that explains the Polish bolt release.

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I have found another example of a very similar rifle over at gunboards: https://www.gunboards.com/threads/picked-up-a-wwi-gewehr-98-converted-to-a-k98.227191/ It appears that this rifle, like mine and @runner's, also has a Gew98 front sight attached. This rifle also has a very similar "step" in...

    Help with Canted Front Sight

I believe it's a "cap" as another forum member put it. It's a Gew.98 sight base attachment afaik. Would this be the method? Just saw this:

    Help with Canted Front Sight

This isn't your typical k98k sight base so I'm not sure this would work. As it is a Gew.98 front sight base, it is more of cap than a sleeve.

    Help with Canted Front Sight

So the screw is still present. However, this front sight assembly is very unusual. Please see pictures below—basically the front sight assembly was grafted onto a depot cut down Karab. 98b.

    Help with Canted Front Sight

I’m a bit stumped. I took my k98k to the range for the first time yesterday. She shot tight group…but not where I wanted them. After a few minutes of futzing around, I figure out that the front sight base is canted. How do I fix this??? For reference, this is a cut-down Gew. 98. Prior discussion...

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I took apart the rifle again and confirmed that there are no import marks anywhere. Rear sight base number matches receiver and barrel. Further, I found that the stock is a duffle cut stock. Not sure if this adds anything—it’s possible that the stock was just added on later state-side. I’m not...

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

To add to this theory, it wouldn’t make sense for the Russians to even go about shortening the long rifles into k98k spec, considering how many intact k98k’s they captured along with spare/salvageparts, tooling, etc. It would be way too labor intensive for no benefit. It seems more likely that...

    1925 Simson & Suhl K98k - Help

It’s a RC for sure, at least the barreled receiver. I suppose the parts could’ve been cobbled together though, but that tale is lost to time . It has the unmistakeable X above the serial number, although fairly lightly stamped on this example. I don’t see anywhere with a different finish so...

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

I I did a full tear down last night and looked for every marking possible. There were no import marks anywhere. I’m leaning towards an importer forgetting to mark this one, since I’ve seen reports of that on RCs.

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

Here’s what I have to compare. We have the exact same front sight assembly it appears, with the line beginning at the front sight post. Your “step” is a tad further back it appears, though. We do have the same milling marks, although yours appears rougher.

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

Do you have more pictures of the barrel, specifically towards the muzzle? Thank you

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

What makes this an oddball RC to me is the total lack of import marking. From my understanding, that’s fairly uncommon?

    K98k Converted from Karab. 98b/Gew. 98?

Thank you for the replies. Here is a picture of the firing proofs under the stock. As for the barrel, I’m not seeing anything in the bore that would indicate an extension. @Absolut, how can I check if the front size is sleeved on? I’m not seeing such indications at the muzzle, although the...

    1925 Simson & Suhl K98k - Help

Thank you for the reply. The rear sight is indeed mismatched. Also, unrelated, but the bolt sear gets hung up a bit on the rear action screw. I can’t find others having this issue though—is it the wrong action screw?
