K98k PU sniper conversion for review

I'd braze one myself for that kinda ducats. Eye keeeed. Eye keeeeed. That eye relief seems a bit too far forward; perhaps 3" further forward than its intended use. Anyone with a M91/30 w/PU scope? Trying using it with your head 3" further back and tell us whether it's doable? TIA.

I see a ribbon for the Iron Cross 2nd Class and Iron Cross 1st Class. Absence of an infantry assault badge, wound badge, close combat clasp furthers the suspiciousness of the image. You don't get Iron Crosses for selling girl scout cookies for the fuhrer. Too bad we can't read his cuff...

Was the Mauser 71/84 Rifle used by the Volkssturm?

S Patrone cartridges were higher pressure than the Gew 88 cartridges.

Was the Mauser 71/84 Rifle used by the Volkssturm?

Was Wehrmannschaf just for SA men? I ask because marksmanship training began with the HJ with the top shot getting the Honor Rifle (some 22) which he was allowed to take home along with ammunition to practice with. I don't think they got any rifle marksmanship under RAD b/c they were digging...

Was the Mauser 71/84 Rifle used by the Volkssturm?

Thank you Cyrano4747 - I know the SA uniform and even saw the historical documentary The Blue Brothers that had illinois Nazis, but the other guys with different caps baffled me. I knew it wasn't ReichArbeitDienst (look at the dustjacket to the book, A Tale of Two Soldiers and the German guy...

Neat WW1 Gewehr 98 sniper photo

So important to write in pencil (not permanent like ink) on the back to identify the person (full name, DoB, relationship and period).

Was the Mauser 71/84 Rifle used by the Volkssturm?

The uniform cap looks more Italian to me but I'm no expert. Anybody belong to The Company of Military Historians. Those guys know all about the material culture.

Brazing as a means of securing the mount base? I don't think a German armorer would do that. Certainly an armorer would have that skillset but highly unlikely he would resort to brazing. That's a lot of heat on the receiver. Absent any documentation showing the modification, dubious would be...

    Safe to shoot?

It's the contact between the REAR of the recoil lug and the stock that is important. A gap allows the recoil lug & receiver to move under recoil, stressing the stock.

    Safe to shoot?

Hindsight: It might be best to get a spare stock and use that spare stock for shooting. That way the original is untouched. Do no harm.

You can also acraglass around where the lug would fit the stock. Just a bit and then put in the action. Be sure to apply release agent to the metal FIRST. If you don't you can permanently glue the action to the stock. We'd plug the screw hole with clay first too to keep any acraglass out of...

I Have a dual trigger 8mm Mauser rife. (added more pics)

Custom gun, possibly American. Rib down the barrel that are integral to the barrel is generally a custom gun. Could the Germans do it? Sure, they had the machinist skill (all milling machine work). Clayton Nelson of Gunnison, CO does those on most of his guns. He doesn't engrave though...

Yep. Fewer machine marks which means less sanding to remove them. We had to make our receivers scratchless. Polish, polish, polish (and I'm not talking about our Polish brethren).

    Headspace question

If it doesn't close on the field gauge, GOOD. If it closes that means your chamber is too long and needs to be set back. (Remove metal from barrel face and perhaps remount the sights if they are now canted.) Nobody here is "fire forming" to wildcat a new cartridge.

German made Argentine Mausers are some of the best machined ones out there.

    Headspace question

For clarification, barrel is on the receiver and the stripped bolt is used to check headspace. It should close on "go" gauge but not on "no-go" gauge. Field gauges are not needed but should it close on that, replace the barrel. Alternatively, the barrrel can be reamed, relined and...
