Good to know Will remove the one on there and polish it up to make it correct. I was not sure if they still did fire bluing at that stage on the screws.

Here she is Still missing some minor parts. Have a correct rear band and replacement screw coming in next week. Also need to reblue the rear swivel and install it. Also have a quick disconnect rear sling coming in as well. Will see how she shoots once it is all together. The all matching part...

surprised Yeah the overall condition and it's matching status was a huge surprise. I haven't cleaned the bore yet. Was going to soak it all down with motor oil and get any crusties out of it. I know original gew 98 stocks are really hard to find and pricey. I ordered a quick disconnect rear...

    rescued sporter

recently picked up what I believe is an all matching GEW 98 Erfurt 1916 sporter. Interestingly enough it has matching numbers almost across the board (7308). I did find the number 38 stamped on the safety. but also saw a number 38 stamped under the receiver leading me to believe that it was...

Was thinking of that I have seen some gew 98s with the bayonet lug polished. And some without. Hard to tell if the ones without were blued or patina from the years of exposure. I wanted this thing to look factory correct if possible. Gonna take it out this weekend for a spin. Thank you for the...

The beast is now a beauty And the finished product. Polished the receiver and bolt, the barrel blue is original. Rebarreled with a correct 29 inch barrel (original had been cut down to 26 inches). Purchased, bead blasted and refinished the barrel bands, bayonet lug, rear swivel, band retainers...

sent it off When I get it back from the bead blaster later this week I will look for the barrel markings. Was way too much rust and crud to get a good shot of what was stamped there. Finishing up the stock today...

Not yet Curious at my point of impact being that that sight is no longer calibrated to the length of the barrel. Overall not a bad looking bore. Will scrub it out and probably use cast bullet loads to shoot it. Probably should have put a few rounds downrange before I went through all this...

lousy gunsmiths Here in the vegas area not too many good gunsmiths I would trust to do the work. Most are preoccupied with black plastic tactical bolt on guns. I shortened the nose and carved out the relief for the bayonet lug. Have some more finishing to do and in letting of the stock for the...

    Need some stock advice

Was afraid of that It fits nicely in a k98 stock but sticks out more than I like at the end. I may end up trying to modify the long stock to fit. Wasn't sure if the barrel marks were Bubba or arsenal done. Reason being I have seen Turkish rework rifles with the same marks. Regardless gonna try...

reference pics Here you go. There are marks that indicate someone tried to remove the barrel. Unsure if Bubba or arsenal done. Unsure if barrel removal was successful.

    Need some stock advice

Purchased a 1916 dwm gew 98. Barrel matches receiver. Nearly zero finish. Severely sanded sporterized stock. Purchased a 98 mauser stock with hardware and noticed that the barrel comes to the end of the bayonet lug (bayonet lug slightly overhangs the barrel). The overall stock length is 43.5...

Finished the stock The flash makes it look a little harsh but the repair blended nicely considering how poorly it was fixed initially. I had to scrape all the old glue out of the joints then realign and epoxy

    walnut stock cure time

Thats the weird part The stock is numbered 4067, the hand guard also is numbered 4067. The serial of the rifle is 4067 in fact with the exception of the bolt and follower the entire rifle is marked 4067 or at least 67. The only odd number is that 13 at the tip of the bayonet lug area.

    walnut stock cure time

dating Ok so theoretically if a stock is marked say 22 at the tip but the rifle has a 1925 date, then maybe safe to assume the stock was made in 1922, dated, cured, then installed in 1925 and serialed at that time?

    walnut stock cure time

Was suggested I ask in this section. Have a 1915 erfurt kar 98 az. The stock forend tip is marked with an arsenal mark and the number 13. Read on wikipedia that stocks were cured for a few years before being installed. The stock is walnut. Any truth to this at all? Thank you
