As you can see, the bolt has what appears to be only half the serial number on some portions. Can anyone tell me if it's just abbreviated, or it is not matching.

This is been discussed plenty of times if I’m not mistaken. It’s a turd on gunbroker and it’s been listed for a while. Bad description by the seller, I don’t like it all. I think it has the import markings on the left side of the rear sight base. Most likely and I hope that the serial on the receiver was added legally during the importation process. If that was not the case, it’s an illegal gun with a tampered receiver…

Thanks guys ! It was on gunbroker and looked fishy to me but K98s aren’t my area of knowledge. Thanks for the responses!

I would not consider this a turd.

A better description would be not factory correct.
It is a late SS contract that looks to be post war arsenal rebuilt. The auction even mentions this - "and may have been arsebaled in another country after the war"
I think the floor plate could be original with the trigger guard forced matched.
The bolt body "could be" factory with the other parts forced matched.
Sling could also be original.
Over all not a bad gun if the price is right and you know what you are buying. Way better than a typical RC.

I'm viewing the pics on my phone so quality not the best, but the bolt and the gas shield seems to have meet some heavy grinding.

To me, it does not exhibit any of the trademark re-arsenaled post-war rework features. The import mark of the left side of the rear sight base shows “ger”… so Germany, but usually that’s were the firearm originated from in the first place. I am not aware of any East German or even West German reworks that exhibit these features. The small serial on the left side of the stock is reminiscent of some very early mausers for export.

I know that it’s difficult to import rifles into the US without a receiver serial. That’s the law since the 60’s I believe. If customs releases the shipment, the atf gives importers 15 days grace period to properly mark new serials and import markings on the firearms. I think the serials were done here in the US along with the importer markings personally. Perhaps somebody figured since they are already grinding and stamping stuff… keep going. The “0”s on the bolt and it’s parts are different in style to both the added receiver serials and the original barrel serial.

The receiver definitely was hit hard with grinding and polishing. The firing proof on the receiver is basically non existent (see red circle).

I wouldn’t touch it, too much uncertainty and question marks, but that’s just me.

non-existent because it never had one....
Your right. This was a late 44 SS contract originally. Barrel code verifies that. The 43 receiver confused me. Mine is the variation with the FP on the barrel and receiver with serial on the receiver.

I swear you could see the outline of a FP outline though… but I’m wrong.

Very cool. Don’t see those often at all… but you see I was under the impression that the DDR reworks were generally if not almost exclusively made out of Czech produced k98ks. Maybe that’s why we mostly see them as DOT, SWP and DOU receivers. I’ll be honest and admit I’ve only handled one at a show years ago and it was dot receiver if I recall correctly. Peened FP where the swastika was. Stamped like yours on the stock with similar markings on the bottom. A standout that I recall vividly was the blued cupped buttplate.

While I do see similarities to your example, im still on the fence. Perhaps I’ve seen too many humped k98ks in my collecting years that I’m scarred…

I found this Forum after buying this rifle and did some research..... so here's better pictures for the Experts, The Stock doesn't feel sanded, and has wood defects. The barrel is marked WaA623 and also marked WaA77 on the side, the bolt surprisingly is marked WaA77 but its worn. The floor plate is marked BYF 135 and the top sight is marked 655 855 and was also made by BYF {Mauser Werke} from my little research they stopped using the 655/855 stamping in 1941. under the sight its marked 599 with an eagle, and has a Z marking. stock band is marked 280 and SN. 0825 with a Eagle, so Erma stock band? The front barrel band is an outlier.... its marked with a much older proof k167 (Mauser oberndorf) and SN 204... I haven't taken the stock off to look under the surface yet.... SO the rifle has full German parts besides the front sight protector, also wasn't Erma making Receivers and barrel bands for SS Rifles?

also the bolt Safety is marked 37 with an eagle, and the front hand guard is marked with a triangle TG2 underneath, so its east German refurbish?
