DOU 44 Vet Bring back w/ Phosphate riveted bayonet

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my DOU 44 Z block, the rifle is semi kriegsmodell and came with a Phosphate riveted bayonet. I purchased this rifle from a WW2 vets son, his father Carl Stefanik was in a US Army artillery battalion in Belgium when he acquired this rifle and bayonet from a deceased German soldier. He mentioned his father fought in Italy in 1943 and In france and Belgium in 1944. His son mentioned his father never talked about the war but mentioned details about the rifle he kept in his closet since he came home. Im extremely grateful I paid his son $1600 for the rifle and bayonet and mentioned i’d continue to keep the information with the rifle and how it was captured. The rifle is all matching but the butt plate, and has no duffle cuts.

Wow $1600 for all of that? You stole it! Congratulations! I have dou 44, s/n 202 Z block, so mine was made a few days before yours.

I purchased it 3 years ago, total steal! Thank you! Thats interesting yours is so close to mine, do you have photos of your DOU? I’d love to see it
 
Someone sharpened the bayonet postwar. interestingly Stefanik is a slovak name and rifle was made in Slovakia.

Nice story. That narrows it down quite it bit as far as units the veteran might have served in. There weren't too many units that would have been in Italy and then transferred to the ETO later on. 1st infantry division rings a bell and maybe a few others.

I talked to his son 3 years ago after his father passed away, I do believe he was in the 1st Infantry, his son sent me an email with all the information I have to find it, his Father Carl was transferred.

Ive been given different answers regarding the stock being finished, some say its untouched im not sure but i’ll take your word for it
