Rough Forged revision reprint

I was not impressed with the last book, I expected a vastly improved upon Hitlers Garand's and what we got was like you said, more a coffee table book. I plan on off-loading mine.
My name is in it I believe , albeit misspelled. So I’ll keep it but am unlikely to spend more money.

I’ll wait to see if these are vastly improved or not. They are basically a coffee table book at the moment not a collectors guide.
I saw Darren on Saturday at the Tulsa show. He was not happy once he figured out who I was. He asked me if I was “going to trash his book online again?” Haha. I said, “depends on how good it is.” I can understand why it upsets him.

I’ll say this since I know he reads this forum more than he leads on, his last book is not at all what I was hoping for. It’s his right to write the book however he pleases. But I was hoping for a book that went into more detail about the features of the G/K43. Scope mounts, square vs round, numbering of scope mounts, barrel code studies to help better date rifles, higher quality photos (the new revision could easily fix this issue), accurate info on the SVT 40 sniper (not fake rifles). Just to name a few.

Did you discuss the issues you had with the book with him? Did he shed any light on the revision book?

My understanding is he is going to correct some errors and have better quality photos in the new book. I pre ordered it mainly because of the promise of better photos. I know he was disappointed in the poor quality photos in the first printing.

I did not. I assumed he has read my posts here so no need to rehash it.

He did mention the revision was done and at the printers. Should be available soon.

To be fair to you, they are valid criticisms

Since my book 3 on StG44 accessories is at the printer, I started the next project, which is accessories to K43. This time I plan a German and an English version, since I have done a translation of the text into English with the StG 44 series anyway, which comes as free addendum. So I might make at least mdarnell19 happy with all versions of magazines, pouches, scopes and mounts etc. But in general my detailed approach seems not to be a piece of cake for many. Except for true enthusiasts my books are considered by "normal" collectors sometimes as too specific. Since the true enthusiasts often help me with pictures or something like that and get a copy for free, making a book is rather something for oneself, as it seems. I think that the general collector public rather wants a "coffee table book". And I can understand that negative comments on a book may hurt the author, since to bring out something like that is always a giving away of part of one's soul. Personally I think the revised edition will be a great work.

I have the original Hitler's Garands as well as the Rough Forged set. And contributed to both. Have not heard a great deal regarding what has been revised or added for the RF revised edition. There is some talk in this thread regarding a few areas such as the SVT 40, error correction and higher quality photos. I could not find anything to this effect on the web site either. I'm a big proponent of reference books but at the moment on the fence about laying down two bills without knowing what and how much has been revised/corrected and/or improved. My thoughts only .....

I have a retarded amount of $$ into reference books....think matching G41 $$ at at least but this is where I'm at.

I had good dealings with Darrin at Tulsa. He had flyers promoting the new release at his tables and on the bathroom walls. I believe next month is the target date?

I will buy the new version simply for the better photos.

Maybe the criticism helped in motivating him to get a new book going?

What to do with the old Rough Forged set now as I’d like to get the new set.

Lol, I'm in the same boat. I've got them all on a shelf and have been very, very careful to make it clear to my wife that if I get hit by a bus these books over here are worth throwing on ebay.

On the other hand, though, I consider them a pretty necessary part of the hobby. I could probably do without some of them (do I really need the Ruth M1 Carbine book when I only own two of them and neither are collector's items? No) but when it gets down to the German stuff absolutely.
