MG-08 can?

I can’t make sense of the lower beveled corner and notch in it. Does anyone know of anything more specific about the application for this one?

Looks like a US M1917 Browning wooden ammo box. I don’t know if any wooden boxes the Germans made that would have a notch like that or a beveled corner. The top cut out in the lid is a dead giveaway though. The German ammo boxes had a much bigger cut out for the handle and used metal handles.

Do watch for the German metal cans. They can bring some crazy money for an empty box haha. They usually have odd means of clasping shut when compared to what you typically see on the US surplus market. I have yet to see any in the wild, but some cans are “unit marked”.
