Model 98 Rifle with scope

Cpl Norton is the expert on USMC Unertl.

Most of that rifle can be cleaned up by you. It's a lot of handwork (no dremel) with sanding blocks and emery paper. Once it's repolished evenly, it can be reblued. Consider taking a NRA Summer Gonnesmything bluing class and if you take it at Trinidad, I'll meet and supervise your work (last time I hung around I came away with two articles that were published).
Thank you. Lots of great info.

Sorry to be ignorant here. Where is the receiver ring? I can get closeups and send you. Attached are close ups of the bolt handle and end of bolt.
Sorry, I meant the same part that ‘1944’ is marked on, that the barrel screws into. The front base for the scope mount covers or partially covers the maker code, which is engraved above where you can read the 1944. You might be able to see the edges of the letters along the sides of the base. it would be 3 lower case letters like :byf, dot, the code, and or the other marks I’m asking about help tell where & when it was made, if the marks haven’t been removed.

serial number location
acceptance stamps location

At the top of the receiver it is stamped 1944. Bolt is stamped 9882
if its stamped “1944” rather than “44” or “4”, I’m going to guess that the original rifle was a dot 44, built at Brno in Czechia while under German occupation. (because I think that’s the only maker that used all 4 digits that year)
