MG08/15 Packing

I got my approval a few months back but have not had time to lug all of the equipment out to a range. I plan to finally bring it out to shoot this weekend but I'll be honest. I am trying to make sure I am packing the correct place/s. I have no problem with the muzzle gland but more so around, where the hell do I pack the rear? I have seen some explanations online on other forums but was hoping someone would have a picture?

Pinging to follow.

I have used a graphite packing string that I got at Home Depot. You have to be careful with it. If you use too much it will jam up the barrel to where it cannot actuate the action. Other than that I would put a heavy amount of grease behind said packing area to try and seal it up for a bit. Anyway you go you’re likely to have water running down your hand at some point. Here is the grease and packing I use.

Thanks Ozz. I got some teflon string I plan to use but will add this grease since I still had yet to decide on what to use. I got some good information from the 1919 forum around how to pack the rear - had no clue you had to remove the barrel from the jacket so now it makes much more sense.

There is a kit for the front muzzle device on apex. Typically when I am loading or working on it during a range visit I tilt it forward so water doesn’t pool up in the receiver.

When you go to drain the jacket, don’t forget there is a brass drain plug where the bipod mounts. To protect the inside of the jacket I thoroughly hit it with an air compressor and leave it open to dry for a few days. After that I pour some ballistol into the jacket and slosh it all around to coat the inside. It can be a little tricky with all the openings.

I need to start a few 08/15 threads.

Old barrels usually have a wrapping of asbestos string in the rear groove - so you can get an idea. But they are usually also worn down and not proud enough to seal. Worst case, you can get it too proud and stop the action of the barrel but it becomes obvious and so you unwrap a few wraps and try again.

Yes, you really should. I for one would be interested in what knowledge you have to share. The little you shared here has already been very helpful.

It’s about the full extent of my knowledge so far 😂. I want to find seals for everything, what belts work and what belts don’t work, tips and tricks for getting you gun running, where to get parts, and what repro parts are good vs junk. I’ve got a note on my phone I JUST started earlier today. Once I get enough content in it, I will post it up and see if they sticky it.
