What Markings would one find on an ORIGINAL MP/StG44 Stock?

Good Morning all! There are many Wood Stocks out there for the MP44/StG44 series of guns. I’ve heard that the Germans didn’t mark these stocks with serial numbers…yet have seen some archival photos showing serial numbers on lower portion as is seen on the 98’s. Then I’ve seen WaA in the Sling Keeper Well or recess….maybe included with that, a makers code. Can anyone shed light on what is considered “Legit” or reasonable to find on these stocks? Also, I have a very late war stock that is a very dark solid wood. It has only one WaA in its sling recessed area, but that’s it! It really shows little wear (Extremely nice) but darker than I’ve ever seen. Any ideas on what wood this is?

I’ve included pictures. Below the “Original” (?) Stock is a repro “Shoei” stock. Reason I include this is that I was told the one in question is a Shoei Repro…I don’t think so!

Here’s a better (?) picture of the WaA in the sling well. It appears to be 280?

I misstated something about the first picture. What I meant to say was….I have included what I believe is an original stock, and below it is a Shoei MP44 Reproduction Stock. I hope I didn’t cause confusion?

Is this on a Sauer rifle? My own serial matching Sauer MP44 has a stock like the upper one at first glance. My other later examples have stocks that are near identical in design/lamination as the K98ks and G/K43s.

Yes, it’s from a Sauer Vet bring home. Unfortunately it was cut, and left in a duffle bag in the basement. This basement got wet….and I’m concerned the stock is so dark due to this?

I’m glad you mentioned that your is equally as dark. My concern was that it had gotten damaged due to water, that made it so dark. The two corner pieces are rusted…as well as the ferrule.

Oh My! Is there any way that I can restore this back to the color of yours I wonder. If I look into the well where the takedown tool and manual would be stored…it definitely has a lighter color. So, perhaps my next post should be, “How do I restore my water soaked Elm Stock”?

Also, the water has seemed onto open the grain up….i wonder if there’s a way to tighten it back up a bit? Obviously, I choose to do no further harm to this, just trying to give it the mercy of a good restoration of this matching vet bring back set. Perhaps tackling rust and pitting of other parts might be an easier way to go?

Barkeepers Friend, oxalic acid, will reduce the dark stains on your stock, which were caused by the steel hardware being wet near the wood. The grain on elm is normally pretty open, not much you can do for it.

that’s just the way elm grows. ever try to split elm for stove wood? It’s a cast iron beyotch! Each successive layer of growth spirals around the trunk, in alternating directions, makes it a real chore to split w/maul & wedges. even using a logsplitter, you have to cut starter notches in the ends of the rounds for the ram wedge to start out in.

Original stock does have serial numbers and they should match the collar. Mine also has stamps in the sling keeper well.
