byf44 no-letter-block bolt MM hardwood

After a couple of years, I finally have a Mauser made K98 again. I traded my 1916 Danzig stock MM Gew98 for it...I've had that rifle 26 years and it was hard to let it go. Some interesting observations about this one: NLB for one, hardwood stock for two, and a late war round hole e/63 DOT bolt. Bore is a little rough and about 2/3 finish remains....this piece saw a bit of use. Sling is a well-used reproduction with an original frosch. cleaning rod is unfortunately a reproduction.

Question: What kind of wood? Oak, Elm, or Walnut?

It was my sling and frosch. I only have a couple original slings. The better one, 1938, sits on my matched 1939 Sauer.

Very nice! Imma have to check out the thread on that. Just the thought of finding a 39 Sauer for my 40 and 41 makes me tremble a bit wondering what the price tag will be 🫠☠️

I did post it.

Well that is just the way I like'em! Metal fnish wear, bruise's and discoloration of the stock and replacement parts, all of it just adds character. The bore is also mint on that example as well! Which is a rather big surprise to me.

Well it made it through 6 years of war intact; more or less. The byf looks about the same and barely served 2.

Agreed, makes me wonder how my 1940 Sauer made it thru with so much finish loss and stock wear etc. but still matching parts, coulda been a bicycle/motorcycle message carrier rifle maybe.

I agree that it is the walnut that Oberndorf used throughout the war, the stock looks quite similar to my walnut stock byf 43. Congrats on picking up what looks like a nice honest bolt mm. Elm typically shows up on k block byf 43s iirc.
