Hi everyone. New member here and new to K98k’s. I have just finished my WW2 pistol collection that started as a plan to get one Luger, one Nambu Type 14, and one Colt .45. Needless to say it went well beyond that by multiples. I can post pictures if you like. And now I have set a goal of getting an M1 Garand, an Inland Carbine, an Ariasaka Type 99, and of course a k98k. I have a sporterized Enfield rifle from my youth and need to get that “repaired”.

I am getting the Volume II books for Christmas so I am happy about that. When I sought out pistols beyond the three I mentioned above I went for the earliest war year examples I could find. So that brings me to my k98k question. I have looked at some and I am thinking of focusing on a 42 code 1940 Mauser. I have been looking around and those seem somewhat available. I am not ready to buy one yet but was wondering if I could borrow your expertise and see if that’s a good starting point. I also would like to post one from gunbroker to test what I think versus the experts. Anyway, thanks in advance for having me as well as your knowledge. Best, JR

there are more but I thought these were the most telling. thanks. And sorry about the link earlier. If i knew how to blur the test in these I would do that too.

Personally I like what I see. Looks like a solid example of 42 1940. Obviously still quite a few components I would like to check though.

Thanks for responding. What other components would you check so I can learn what to be wary of? Thanks so much.

Its always tough with auctions, cause a lot of them won’t take the rifle apart.

But a few other things would be: front and rear sight components, bayo lug, hand guard (if they are willing to take it off), follower, extractor, firing pin.

Ok. Thanks. Looking forward to my books at Xmas time. And thanks for your insight. Going to look harder at these and learn more of the terms. I know the pistols but now need to learn the rifles.

And of course I was only going to have one Luger. Now I have 6. I’m sure there are plenty of k98k variations to collect too!!! Really appreciate it!!!

What do you mean? Like are they rare? A nice 42 1940 is a pretty desirable and not super easy to find K98k.

Looks like the one you were initially looking at finished at $2825

Only negative on that example imo was the cracked toe. That example is in way better condition tho than my Luftwaffe example. I think 2825 was a good hammer price for that example and it came with a sling and cleaning rod, mine cost me 2900.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure how rare they are. I saw that price. I have no frame of reference so it was interesting to see and learn from. Thanks

Thanks. I think that is one I would like to have but I didn’t know enough about it to chase that price.
