Gewehr 98 J. P. Sauer 1916 9319h

My latest find, a 1916 J. P. Sauer. Glad to add this one to the collection, especially after seeing some of the stunning Sauers a few members here have.

This came from a collection but luckily nothing obscene had been done to it, only a few more recent scratches probably from being packed in a safe. It wasn’t overcleaned and has that "out of the woodwork" look. The usual spots that collectors miss needed gunk removed, like the rear sight slider which now moves flawlessly.

It's a great example of a typical 1916 consortium Gew. The make of the components is consistent with my 1916 Haenel, with the same specific parts on both being made Haenel, Schilling, and Sauer, respectively. What is really nice about this Gew is that the acceptance is easy to recognize due to the condition, and helps give an idea of what parts each member of consortium made (which i suspect changed as time went on).

Not much else to say, on to the photos.

Front sight, triggerguard, and bands. Floorplate and follower are mismatched.

Bolt. Safety is mismatched. I could use an armorers for it if anyone has one they’d part with.

Great rifle with an amazing stock Cyrus. I must confess I’ve never seen a serial number stamped up under the handrail lip. I’ve never looked. Is that typical?
Interesting wear pattern around that recoil lug.

Cyrus, That's an A grade JPS, glad you snagged it quickly. They don't come up often in that kind of shape. Great metal, nice dark typical JPS stock. It's "chefs kiss" worthy. Only a fool would pass on it or let it go once you had it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Congrats on a sweet JPS Gewehr 98! That's a beauty of a rifle, especially with that dark walnut and crisp stock markings! I also appreciate the breakdown of proofs (C/N, C/Q) as I'm not familiar with which ones each manufacturer used, really helps me keep track of who used what.

Updated with the data chart. These always take a little longer, want to make sure all the acceptance is correct.

Dark stock and uncleaned metal 👍👍
Best way to find them!
That's a nice gewehr Cyrus, great pickup. I'm sure I've got an armorer's safety that'll work.
Thanks Mike! Sent you a message.

Thank you, Rick! No not typical at all, first that i've noticed. I'm going to go check my '16 Haenel, it could have been a consortium thing, or perhaps was unique to Sauer.

Could not agree more, good Sauers are not common and worth holding on to when you do. Thank you, Chris!
Congratulations Cyprus 😜
That JPS is a stunner. Glad it turned out to
Be everything you wanted. Truly exceptional
Appreciate it, Kallan! You knew i was optimistic from the listing photos, and could not be happier with it now.

Thanks man! Ages ago we started discussing the different makers in the consortium and who made what parts, since then i have been harvesting data. At some point i will revisit this and explain it more thoroughly.
Gorgeous stock, great snag!!
Thank you, Matt!

Cyrus, so glad you grabbed this one! It’s such a nice rifle, the stock is frankly out of this world and appears to have some nice figure near the buttplate.

For sure, the Suhlers are always sticky for me. It’s always rough to see someone let go of an irreplaceable example chasing the “flavor of the month”.

Big agree. I know some folks out there are only in it for the dopamine hit from posting something and getting "likes" and such : I'm certainly not going to flip or churn after the hard work of finding all of my Suhlers. In some cases, like 1915s, if you let one go you may never find another.
