Second Colonial Gew 98

Well my shipment of four rifles and one pistol from South Africa finally came in August, which included my second Schutztruppegewehr 98. I was and still am excited to add this to my ever growing Schutztruppe collection. I still need to clean it up. I've been just so busy since it came. I'm hoping I can clean it up soon and make it look a little more presentable. I did take it apart a while back. It is a mixed master, but i'm not gonna complain about it. They are hard enough to find as is. I do feel blessed that I have one that was used by Schutztruppe and Landespolizei now. After talking to Chris. The rifle used by the Landespolizei does have a depot replacement bolt. I will include some comparison photos of the two.

Love it - wouldn't it be great to reunite all of these one day and line them up together ?
Just went and got my G98 out from the cabinet (thanks for the inspiration!)

Glad you finally got it! Looking forward to adding it to the reference when you get it cleaned up and fully photographed. I’ll put this in there for now.
Thank you. I'm thinking about making an a guide or an outline for the rifle. I wrote an article about the rifle couple years ago and I have updated that sense.

The majority of all the colonial Gew 98 are in south africa. I would love to examine more just to learn more about them. I will say having two now is very beneficial when it comes to research.

Congrats on another Schutztruppe Gewehr 98, I bet it'll clean up nicely! I'm curious how exactly you got this rifle shipped from South Africa and if there's any special import hoops you had to jump through to get it into the States. What exactly was the process for it?

The import process is pretty clearly outlined on the government or importer websites. It's not complicated, it just takes time and you have to pay the import fees. You work with an importer (Simpson, etc..) that will help you through the process..

Naturally, the rifles have to be import marked too, but most of the good importers laser engrave them now and they are very discreet.

On the other side, countries have various export rules; the seller would generally convey the rifle to an exporter to ensure the rules are being followed.

I view it as only worth the time, effort and money for something you may not find otherwise. Fortunately ,several here have had success with it.

Not many hoops to go through. The biggest thing about importing it will test your patients. I have only imported items from South Africa. Like Chris said, every country is different. I use Simpson limited as my importer. You can call them or you can email about the importing process works.

Alright, nice to know there's plenty of resources out there on it and history of good imports here on the forum. It definitely would be an option if I ever really had to have a Schutztruppe Gewehr.

German East Africa?
Going off of the leather ammo belt. That photo was probably taken in German South-West Africa. That is the third pattern ammo belt. German South-West Africa was the only German colony that had a special standard issue leather ammo belt.

The guy sitting down has a third pattern ammo belt. The guy standing has a second pattern ammo belt.
