Grooved ES 340b Rear Sight

Can anyone that has one of the "Grooved" ES 340b rifles that uses a set screw to retain the rear sight take some pictures of the bottom of the sight base for me?

I'm sure that you have a 350's rear sight. Please post a picture of it like you want the grooved barrel one to be taken.

Fal Grunt,
I hope the following ones will fit your needs, if you need more do not wait too long, please. I would like to install it back on the rifle and would also like to avoid to remove it again.

Thanks for that! I was looking at earlier models and how their sights are attached. What i was trying to nail down was whether the difference in sights was the cut out being on the barrel or the sight. I think, based on the few pictures I could find, the rear sights on the earlier 340/350 target models have the relief cut into the barrel for installing the sight, vs the sight having the relief cut, like the one you pictured.

It seems as though there was a direct carry over of the set screw retained sight from the previous model, but the relief cuts are different.

I've install the 340B sight on a ES350B barrel, it is possible (it could slide both for- and backward. It is maintain in the barrel grooves but there is a lot of lag.
I've tried to install a ES350B sight on the ES340B grooved barrel. It is fitting in the barrel cut out but could not slide neither to front nor rear.

Sorry, that’s not what I meant. I was referring to the earlier es340 with a grooved barrel with a set screw vs the es340b with a set screw.

I'm not a machinist.
On Es340N and Ms420N, the rear sight is sliding in the grooves first in the receiver continuing in the barrel grooves.
I guess that these grooves were machined in the receiver and barrel in one operation after receiver and barrel being assembled.
There is something different in barrel or receiver between grooved and not grooved in the N series.
Have a look here at the receiver-barrel junction : https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/t...2-rifles-and-the-grooved-es-340b.47170/page-2 post #30

This post probably shows it best. So for the ES340N, with the grooved barrel and set screw retained rear sight, the rear sight must be slid from the rear of the receiver into position?

Exactly.
On the following picture as I didn't wanted to remove its rear sight again I've tried to show this with the ES340B rear sight.
The B rear sight is passing on the N receiver but could not enter into the barrel grooves (depending the direction it is inserted...)

You're welcome, I've learned something thanks to your question.
I will soon compare the Es340N and Es340N "grooved" receivers and barrels, I will include the Es350N. I will later make the same comparison between Ms420N grooved and un-grooved one.
I believe that I will find either a bigger diam barrel or a change in the receiver. If you think that it could be something else, tell me.

Eurydice, It seems that in order for the grooves to run continuously , the top of the normal es340n receiver is too high, there is the step at the receiver that prevents that. It appears that metal has been removed from only the top of the receiver of the grooved es340n to have the top surface of the receiver on the same plane as the barrel’s top surface.
I measured the barrel diameter of both an es340n and an es340n grooved barrel and get the same diameters at the receiver. I measured the thickness at the rear of the receiver and it is less on the es340n grooved, showing that the top of the receiver has been milled to allow the continuous grooves. My eyes aren’t focusing well today but I believe about .5mm was removed from the top surface. I would think that the es350n would show the same measurements as the es340n grooved barrel. Es340n grooved shown and a photo of the “step” of the normal es340n. I will remove the action of the es340n grooved tomorrow and try to verify my observations.IMG_1866.jpeg

Additional investigation is needed, the measurement I get on the thickness of the receiver top is not enough to lower the top of the receivers plane to the plane of the barrel……

Eurydice, I was not getting an accurate measurement with the rifle in the stock. From the measurements with the action removed I find there is indeed a larger barrel diameter and thinner receiver top on my es340n grooved compared with an es340n ( normal, ungrooved barrel). IMG_1871.jpegThese two features combine to give the level top line of the es340n grooved barrel rifle.

Oldwing,
I was probably making some measurements while you posted.
Comparison between MS420N and MS420N "Grooved" (higher s/n is on the "grooved" one.
The banners on receiver are different.
The barrel diameters are different (25.1mm for un-grooved one and 26.1mm for grooved one)
The height of the "un-grooved" receiver (32mm) is bigger than of the "grooved" one (31.1mm)
Even if the absolute values of our measurements are not the same, I think they match together.
I think that the 11mm groves made in the receivers are deeper for the "Grooved" rifle (Have a look to the gas relief port)

Eurydice, thanks, I had not noticed the difference in the banners and probably would not have . My rifles show the different banners between the ungrooved number 94853 and the grooved number.132285. The banner of my later rifle is very slightly longer and wider than the earlier. Very slight but measurable.
Agreed, our measurements are close enough to determine how the continuous grooves are possible.

I think you are right of the grooves being deeper, necessary for the lower receiver. Interesting thread, best regards

I have some questions and observations of a grooved barrel es340b but I’ll start a new thread in a few days of it.

Well… in reviewing your photo of the late banner I find that the banner on my grooved es340n seems to be different from your banner! Ps, my rifle meeds cleaning but it isn’t as dirty as the photo depicts.IMG_1887.png
