1906 WMO 8541h Reichsmarine 98M- Nordsee Marked

Hi All,

I picked this one up a while back after my good friend and collecting buddy Jory offered it to me. I had remembered it from several years ago when the original owner posted it. I quickly accepted when it was offered, as it's an interesting and scarce variant. I completed it with a Nordsee marked 98M sling and lid I already had in my collection.

The Reichsmarine (aka: Weimar Navy) was on a shoestring budget and they wasted nothing- the limited number of reworks I've seen utilize a lot of salvaged parts and unused Imperial ordnance spares. Some new interwar parts also make their way onto these. The level of reworking is also fairly crude compared to some of the other period reworks. This one doesn't disappoint with a cool RM anchor/M fireproof on the barrel, an imperial armorer's triggerguard and an s/147 rear sight ramp. The bolt, rear band and rear sight are cool interwar Simson-manufactured examples. The stock disc is marked on the left side for Nordsee fleet and the stock has some really cool repair work involving wooden pins/dowels. All parts appear to match as reworked.

The stock is duffel-cut behind the rear band; I recall Chuck, the original owner before Jory, found it missing the foreend, but had the matching front metal with it, so he restored with donor wood that matches really well.

Not much else to say other than share the pictures.

You're on a roll recently with naval arms of short-lived German governments, aren't you?

Love the flare pistol too. Those antique marine flares always look so neat.

Congrats on picking up an awesome Gew98M, you definitely have a penchant for picking up some nice rifles, especially Naval lately. The stock work is interesting, quite a bit of effort in saving the butt of the stock. Never seen a RM marked firearm, very cool rifle to see along with the Nordsee accessories!

That’s a really cool 98m…. It belonged in your Naval collection more than mine. Chuck really had an eye for a good 98m and I was fortunate to buy most of them directly from him. All that I bought from him still reside in my collection besides this one. 3 of them are picture referenced here in this sub forum. I never mind sending a good piece to a friend. The fire proof is just so cool on this rifle

Haha thanks; very coincidental to post those two in close proximity! I honestly wasn't even thinking about it .

I collect imperial flare guns and came across this one and thought it would be a nice compliment to the rifle. The brass navy flare pistols do have that old world character.

Thanks! I've got a handful of reworks that have similar extreme measures taken. My guess is that that was born out of the frugality of the interwar armorers. I can't say that I saw that level of dedication on WW1 reworks.

I've seen a handful of these over the years, but they are pretty scarce. I have two, including this one in the Weimar reference thread. Aside from those two, that may be seen one or two others in matching condition. You'll see them pop up occasionally with some of the Spanish imports, but they are usually pretty far gone.

Chuck definitely had a good eye for 98M. I really appreciate you letting this one slip away. It went to a good home haha.

Certainly interesting piece, is there any suffix on the KM serial?
Thank Andy; from what I've seen I don't believe that they necessarily cared about suffixes. The armorer that numbered the bolt on my rifle ignored the old WMO 1906 suffix.

Another RM 98M in the reference thread had no suffix on the receiver, but the armorer put an "m" suffix on the bolt- My guess there is that he misread the "anchor/M" fireproof on the receiver as a suffix.

I asked about the KM inventory stamp N.1062., not the normal serial number, as the N. italic range was mostly observed with k suffixes. Evidently exist too small range with italic N but they are separate numbers, most real stamped different date as classic latin font N .

I see what you mean now. One of my other KM property marked rifles (early Sauer k98k) has the italic "N" with the k suffix underneath.

I see no evidence of any suffix on the disc on the 98M. Maybe because it was marked earlier?

Hard to say its earlier or not, the rifle is earlier made but when it was refurbished to Gew98m and restamped by KM it could be different dates.

Pretty awesome rifle Chris from such a small, short-lived organization. I’m guessing it is rarer than an Imperial or TR navy rifle. Very nice of Jory to let it go. I have to concur with others here that your naval collection far surpassed any other on this forum in either scope, photography, or description. 💯
