Greetings from Tennessee - Asking ID and resto guidance

Greetings - I am new to this family of gun and most of my own collection is more modern.


I bought this old rifle recently and first, it's in rough shape, but the bore looks decent and the action still functions and will fire (only dry fired).

I would like to figure out what variant this is and age etc because the stock does not seem to match up to the ones I normally see.

I would like to ID it, then get guidance on how to begin cleaning it up. My thought is to clean where I can using ultrasonic but the barrel and rusty parts
will likely need electrolysis bath process. I also don't want to destroy value.

With the DWM logo on the side I'm thinking it is some sort of south American Mauser. I would grab some serosafe (could be spelt cerosafe) and do a chamber casting then look at SAMMI specs for caliber ID. I'm leaning towards 7x57.

Quick edit: overall I'm abit stumped as to what it is, it's worn enough to make me think Chinese but that stock makes me think of a WZ29 in some aspects. Over all again I think you free to do what you want with it as it's practically got no value aside from a project piece. The bolt looks like a K98K bolt based on visible mill marks on the handle but the shroud has a seam going across it horizontally.

Thx very much for taking a look at it - what would be the history on this? It is marked Oberndorf but little else is still visible. Would it be made there and then go out to SA or China?

I’ll stick my neck out & say it’s an M1908 Brazilian short rifle, which were chambered in 7mm Mauser/7x57. you could check this w/a loaded round or better a snap cap (try realisticsnapcaps.com). This one has several distinguishing features the Chinese contract rifles did not: front band has sling hook & is secured by a special screw, trigger guard has the matching hole for the sling clip, id plate on butt, bent bolt, wrist sling anchor, style of rear sight, long hand guard, short bayonet lug……
the thing that throws me off is that its marked DWM Oberndorf a/N, the other example I’ve studied closely is marked DWM Berlin, but they share the above features.
yours is not a model 1908/34, as those were made at Brno & have a unique front sight guard.

compare yours to this one, (& there’s a chinese rifle there as well)

most of all, have fun learning about it!

OK I think we may have a winner - that M1908 has all of the features I could not find like the rotating sling mount and the hook up front etc

Quick update: Got the rifle apart and it was quite crusty down at muzzle end but after some initial cleaning and disassembly the barrel looks solid - like a shooter

Upper hand guard was kinda toasty and is shorter than the more readily available versions so I found that at Apex

Bolt action and trigger are all very clean now and in very good condition after an ultrasonic treatment in dawn dish soap and some simple green

Barrel went into a long electrolysis tank I made up powered by an old battery charger and did wonders - has expected pitting from rust but ready for final cleaning

Will post up some pics of the parts and when back together
