That is an important rifle to look at. Note the scope rings/bases pairing number is 868 whereas rifle number is 0198. IMHO this indicates they fitted the bases either to the large bore rifle or the rimfire rifles, and they were universal. Check the front and rear side of your bases, they may have the 868 on them somewhere too.Just got this one #198 with matching mounts in excellent condition and is stamped Waffenfabrik Danzig...
Here are the pictures finally, all parts match. Some things of note, the scope is a right off in terms of functionality, whoever remounted it quite clearly had a poor idea of what they were doing, the plugs for the original front mount are visible on the reviver ring. It also looks like a Two was accidentally put in the place of the one in the stock sn# but then corrected. There is also an extra set of numbers, 77 on the trigger assembly and trigger guard/magazine well and I’m un sure why that is. The scope SN# is 39602, the rear bell is dented and is missing one of the lenses, I presume lost during or after the new redfeild mount was added. I might see if I can’t get someone to make me a reproduction set of mounts based off of the patent. In the mean time I ordered a second set of red field rings that will clear the action better and will be using a sim maker Hensoldt/ajacks type scope form the 20’s-30’s that I’ve had siting around. Over all though I’m happy to have a 8mm hunting rifle that is something nice enough to be something to pass down the family someday.I just won an auction on gunbroker for one of the Danzig 8mm rifles, SN 915, it also has a Dr Walter Gerard scope, but the “original” mount is missing. There is also another Danzig , SN 6370, also with a Dr Walter Gerard scope and a type of claw mount but this mount does not match. When I get the rifle in I’ll post some pictures.
The Kar98a rings and mounts are different than these Mod 2 rings and bases they look identical but the dimensions were scaled down to fit the smaller scope tube and smaller 22LR receiver size and are not interchangeable, unless I miss read your comment. That is an important rifle to look at. This could indicate that despite the serial is 0198 there were already at least 868 rifles overall made with this mount, both .22 and large bore centerfire (the Mauser small ring action rifle by Danzig). Since not all had scopes on them, I'd assume even more.
I'd be interested to learn if rifle 08 of user @weatherby2 has any pairing number on the bases and rings (not the rifle serial number) and if yes what this reads as.
