Pile of “Wood”

Guy has this stack of old sporterized stocks, I have no need for it but if they might be able to help people out I’ll try to grab them. If it’s a waste of time I’ll let them be.

Not following. Salvageable or cut in a way that makes them useless? Even then I used a takedown disk and recoil lug from one like this for my minelis repro stock, so there is that. Crossbills of that 03a3 stock, also useful .

I know little about stock repair, wasn’t sure if these would be helpful or not, but sounds like they’d help the greater good

As already said, worth pulling the disks and lugs from them if nothing else. I'll also add that I keep around a couple of scraps of unsalvagable stocks for patching / repair purposes. There are times when having a lump of appropriate 80 year old wood is a god send. Even if just for making some color appropriate sawdust to help hide a repair.

edit: and a fair few of those look to just need new foreends. Glad to hear Bruce is giving them a good home.

Guys, Nate from the forum has been working on a long term project to fabricate front ends (K98k stocks) from original material.
While I have made a few from scratch, the addition of a CNC and duplicating machine helps out greatly.
If we can get the stocks, the ones that are basket cases will go towards creating blanks for the new front ends.

Of course, these will be offered on the forum when ready.

Hey Bruce, I have a matched duffle cut stock and hand guard set that has been sanded and cut into uselessness, not sure if that would be valuable for you and Nate. Happy to donate it

Ever thought about making some stocks? I'd love someone to make an odd-sized laminate late Steyr stock.

With the value of k98s being what they are, and the modern capabilities I’m surprised no one has made perfect replicas of, say a late MO KM stock with all the chatter using scans/computers. Even if clearly identified as such, you could sell for a nice price. I worked in a wood shop and saw what a CNC could do and it was impressive. I recently bought a perfect copy of the 08/15 maxim steam port fitting, something that was completely unavailable for many many years. Looks fits and functions perfectly. Right around 100. I feel like values are at the point where something like this that might not have made sense when a matching k98 sold for 500 does when it’s worth 2500. Think about it, you can buy a brand new 69 camaro ( or mustang) body now. Only makes sense when the cars are going for 50-100k. Same with warbirds. Recall the new-build 190s and 262s. So many of car/aircraft “restorations” these days are “data plate” Restorations. Of course an original matching car or airframe will always be worth more, as it would be with rifles. But think of all the matching actions sitting in Yugo etc stocks now. How much would you pay for the correct wood? Not saying to fool anybody of course!

L. Fox was making really decent k98k repro stocks years ago and the price was decent in my opinion. I picked up quite a few and he even made me some late war versions. I guess it helped that I’m fluent in Polish so we were able to go over the fine details and measurements of the bolt cutouts, etc that differentiate certain examples. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier with them. Still nothing beats an original of course but when I was looking for a scrub walnut bnz KM stock 10 years ago for my matching BA… $1800 was what fellow collectors were asking for it.

I think Lesek's products are great & have zero against him, but not being fluent in Polish, problems w/ US customs, problems w/ war next door to him, & possibly health issues he may have, it'd be nice to have an alternative without those issues & perhaps a shorter order-to-receipt queue.

any of you who follow Kevin Wheatcroft know he is building a couple of Tiger I and II's and these are not actual tanks he is restoring, rather they are essentially new builds using as many original parts as possible. Even new build trannies which of course would have never been possible w/o computers. they will essentially be "new", running Tigers. We've already seen it with FG42s/MP44s Liberator 45s etc. COPO/Shelby "Tributes" can now be built with all new parts. and sell for north of 100K. When I was building camaros, we called these "fakes". that's how far the marketplace has come.

Is he still making those stocks by chance?

He's had issues with customs? Really now, that stinks I was hoping to get a stock from him one day :/

The last I saw his lead time on G/K43 stocks was in the ~2 year ballpark. Even if customs was a 100% sure bet, he spoke perfect English, and he was 20 years old and healthy as a horse we'd still need another good source because he's way, way, way over-booked.

Very true, prestigious stocks makes good Lee Enfield stuff but I've seen on here his Mauser stocks used a Yugo as a base and there wrong as a result which sucks. May order a No1 Mk3 stock set from them tho because my 1916 has a warped forend.
