41 BYF Luger

I don’t know a ton about Lugers, but I got this in a trade for some modern handguns I won in a raffle back in 2020. Any help would be appreciated. I got the takedown tool afterwards and I’m pretty sure it’s a fake tool as it was very cheap.

The grips I can’t speak to well, there’s a few different types and varying differences between them all. The Bakelite mags came about sometime in the “U” block for BYF41s so someone made a “black widow” out of this one which as I’m sure you know are a hot commodity.

The bluing looks okay to me, but others may have a better opinion on that as well. Overall still a nice pistol to own!

I think mine is a Z block

You are right, was looking at my phone and didn’t have my glasses on. Bakelite bottom is correct for a “Z” block. The only Bakelite grips I’ve had in person were type 1’s, hopefully someone can come along and tell you if the grips are correct.

I always thought it was an “L” until someone pointed out it was a German Z haha. But yeah I’ve been looking at the grips hard and it’s tough to tell.

They look like type 4 grips but there should be a O or 0 on the right side grip below the recessed hole that is above the threaded hole. The tool may or may not be original. Usually the 655 proof is not stuck very well and it looks almost new.

I will take a look when I get home. Thanks

Here are 2 of my original 655 proofed tools. The first and last digit look slightly rotated while the tool you posted is not. A original 655 tool is selling for $250-$350 currently so I can see people faking them. I recently purchased a 1941 Z Block that is about 1500 pistols before yours and it has numbered wood grips on it and Bakelite magazines. While my 1941 S block has type 4 grips and Bakelite Mags. Can you post pictures of the insides of both grips. There are a few ways to test if they are original.

Very nice rig by the way

Those look like type 6 grips, the only red flag I can see in the pictures are the bubbles on the right side grip. Normally you don’t see bubbles on original grips.

You would need to do some more testing to confirm if they are real. You can hot pin test them, weigh them in grams approximately 50-60 grams for the pair I think, and smell them. They should smell like formaldehyde.

The type 6 grips often weigh less because they tried to cut corners and added filler to the Bakelite. I have a pair of type 6 currently and you can see the filler added to the Bakelite.

There is a good video by Samuel L Antiques on YouTube you can watch as well.
